146 | SELF-LIGATING ORTHODONTIC BRACKETS INCLUDING A LIGATION COVER BIASED TOWARD AN OPEN OR CLOSED POSITION | EP01982640.3 | 2001-09-11 | EP1359859B1 | 2007-04-04 | Abels, Norbert; Backes, Claus H. |
Self ligating orthodontic brackets include a bracket base, a ligation cover which interacts with the bracket base in order to provide ligation of at least one arch wire associated with the bracket base, and spring action that biases the ligation to remain in an open or closed position relative to the base. Such spring action may be provided by an orthodontic barcket (200) that includes a bracket base (202), a flexible ligation cover (204) hingedly attached to the base (202) by a pin hinge (206), and a spring member (208) integrally connected to the cover (204) by an integral film hinge (210) at one end and hingedly attached to the base (202) by a conventional pin hinge (212) at an opposite end. The spring member (208) is curved and attached to the cover (204) and base (204) in a manner so that it reaches maximum elongation somewhere between the closed and open position of the cover (204). Thus, the spring member (208) contracts as the cover (204) approaches both the open and closed positions, thereby selectively biasing the cover toward whichever of these two positions results in further contraction of the spring member (208).

A convertible buccal tube is disclosed which includes an arch wire slot covered by a separable cover. The cover includes a mesial or front flared portion to facilitate placing the end of an arch wire therein without undesirably stressing the cover. The cover is further secured to the buccal tube body by integral seams, brazing or other adhesive means that are varied in strength mesially-distally, with about 50% greater force being required to separate the cover at the mesial end thereof. The cover and increased strength seams provide that the cover is not prematurely separated from the buccal tube, particularly during installation of an arch wire.

154 | LINGUALES BRACKET | EP02719838.1 | 2002-02-14 | EP1359860A1 | 2003-11-12 | Heiser, Wolfgang, Dr. med.; Schendell-Gröling, Claus, Dipl.-Ing. |
The invention relates to a lingual bracket for orthodontic treatment in the incisor and canine region. The bracket has a slot that is aligned in parallel with the bracket base plate, said slot being aligned in such a way that the slot opening points towards the occlusal plane. The depth of the slot is preferably smaller than its width. Said slot acts as an organ for securing an aligning wire, being preferably covered by a closing spring, which is held in a stable manner on the bracket structure in the opening and closing positions. An aligning wire that lies in the slot is pressed against the base of said slot by the closing spring and also has a direct action on at least one lateral slot wall, generating the forces required on the bracket for correcting the tooth. The use of securing catches for the closing spring is no longer necessary, thus reducing the height of the bracket.
