25 ORTHODONTICS HEADGEAR COMPLIANCE MONITOR EP96933166.0 1996-09-27 EP0946908A1 1999-10-06 RAMSAY, Douglas, S.; SOMA, Mani; PRALL, Chris; BARRETT, George, A.
An apparatus and method for monitoring and motivating user compliance for orthodontic headgear (24) of the type using a linear spring-force module (22). The spring-force module (22) includes first (38) and second opposite attachment members that are interconnected to provide spring tension when moved linearly apart. A position sensor (16, 18, 19) detects linear movement between the attachment members. A microprocessor (12) receives signals from the position sensor to determine wear duration, force magnitude, and whether such movement is sufficiently variable to be biological in origin or is attempted mimicry. Multiple determinations made by the processor are recorded over time to provide an evaluation of headgear wear compliance and to provide ongoing motivation for user compliance.
26 TENSIONING SYSTEM FOR AN ORTHODONTIC OUTER BRACE EP95921636.0 1995-01-04 EP0797412A2 1997-10-01 Kooiman, Johan Anton
The invention relates to a tensioning system for an orthodontic outer brace (21), comprising resilient means, and coupling means (9) for transmitting a tensile force exerted by the resilient means to the outer brace. The resilient means comprise a resilient element (5). The tensioning system comprises an arc-shaped guide path (4), along which the resilient element (5) is freely movable. Coupling means can be fixed on one side to the outer brace and are connected to one another on the other side via the resilient element, such a way that the resilient element moves along the guide path when the patient turns his or her head. The guide path can comprise a tube or an arc-shaped strip of metal or can be formed in some other way. Preferably, the guide path is so flexible that the arc shape thereof can be adjusted to the curvature of the patient's neck. The resilient element preferably has a spring constant which decreases or is zero on further extension after a specific spring force or extension is reached. The resilient element is preferably a helical spring.
27 ORTHODONTIC HEADGEAR ASSEMBLY WITH MAGNETIC RELEASE MECHANISM EP94907167.0 1994-01-07 EP0722301A1 1996-07-24 PETERSON, Jeff
An orthodontic headgear assembly (10) which incorporates at least one magnetic release mechanism (38). In one embodiment, the head gear assembly (10) generally includes an inner bow (18), an outer bow (30) interconnected with the inner bow (18), a mechanism (78) for generating and applying a force to the ends of the outer bow (30) which is thus transferred to the patient's teeth, and a magnetic release mechanism (38) which is positioned between each end of the outer bow (30) and the force generating mechanism (78). When a given magnetic release mechanism (38) is subjected to a force of a predetermined magnitude, the mechanism (38) disconnects adjacent portions of the headgear assembly (10) to reduce the potential for the adverse effects on the patient due to snap back of the outer and/or inner bow when at least a portion of the force is removed from the headgear assembly (10).

PURPOSE: To provide the orthodontic chin cap device which corrects reverse occlusion by mandibular protrusion and the orthodontic force measuring means which measures the orthodontic force, direction, etc., thereof. CONSTITUTION: This orthodontic chip cap device is constituted to correct the progenia by mounting freely turnable pulleys 6 on both right and left sides of the chip cap 2 to be pressed to the front end of the lower jaw 1, setting rubber bands (energizing members) 3 on these pulleys 6, detaining both upper and lower ends of these rubber bands by means of hooks to a head gear 5 mounted on the head 4 and pulling the lower jaw 1 rear upward by the chin cap 2. This orthodontic force measuring means is constituted by supporting the points near both ends of four pieces of splints with four pieces of supporting shafts freely turnably with each other to form a rhombic shape and providing the part near one piece of the supporting shaft among these shafts with an angle scale for reading the turning angles between the splints mentioned above.
