In a facebow which overcomes the adverse effects and limitations of current designs by rotating the maxilla in a downward and forward direction, which assists in correcting anterior open bites, this being accomplished by a design that produces forces above the center of resistance of the maxilla and parallel to the Frankfurt horizontal plane. The extra-oral headgear design is characterized by providing two independent adjustments (forehead width and horizontal/vertical dimensions) that allow the appliance to be customized to each patient. In particular the two independent adjustments are provided by a fully adjustable forehead pad and bilateral adjustable blocks on opposite sides of the facebow extra-oral frame to provide horizontal and vertical adjustments.
64 METHOD AND DEVICE FOR PROTECTING THE FREE INNER BOW END OF A FACEBOW DURING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT WITH HEADGEAR PCT/DE9600320 1996-02-27 WO9626684A3 1996-10-31 PHAM THI NGOC THINH; BACHER MARGIT
The invention concerns a method of protecting the free inner bow end of a facebow during orthodontic treatment, wherein the protective device can be secured to the inner bow at any time without the need for soldering. If the inner bow moves out of the molar tube, its pointed end is protected all-around by a soft, resilient and wider shock-absorbing member. In this way the risk of stab wounds to the skin, mucosa and, in particular, the eyes during orthodontic treatment involving headgear is avoided.

An orthodontic appliance and method are provided for moving one or more teeth to a desired set of positions. Each tooth that is to be moved is constrained to move along predetermined paths from an initial position to a final position, while being urged to do so by a suitable force inducing means, which provide a motive force for inducing movements in each individual tooth including translations and rotations.

Disclosed is a functional orthodontic appliance comprising a facebow as an extraoral device for treating malpositions of the jaws or teeth. Said functional orthodontic appliance comprises a pad holder (3) which is fastened to a transition area (20) of the facebow and can be individually positioned and adjusted by very simple means. Preferably, the pad holder is provided with one pair of pads or a twin plate which is/are placed inside the lower lip in the vestibule that is displaced downward. The inventive appliance makes it possible to do functional orthodontic therapy of the lower jaw with all known advantages while correcting the position of the teeth in the upper jaw.

70 Palatal facial bow EP01118102.1 2001-07-26 EP1175874A2 2002-01-30 Santos Pereira, Rui Manuel

The present invention concerns a facial bow similar to those used to transmit to fixed or removable orthodontical appliances extra oral forces which act on the outer side of the dentition, and which comprise an outer bow (3) and an inner bow (4) linked to one another. It is essentially characterized in that the inner bow comprises a rounded area corresponding to the canine-incisal incisal area or presents a backward direction; a point of inflection which corresponds to the point of inflection of the inner arm towards the lingual area of the dental arches or towards the retro incisal lingual area; a lingual segment with an upward, backward and inward direction or just an upward and backward direction; an area to be totally or partially introduced in the tube inserted into the acrylic or directly into the acrylic; and a tube to be inserted into the acrylic.

75 Orthodontic facebow with locking catch EP96308454.6 1996-11-22 EP0775469A1 1997-05-28 Samuels, Russell Henry Ashleigh

A facebow has a locking catch (40) mounted to each of the arms of its inner bow: the end (13) of each arm is inserted through the tube (22) of an orthodontic appliance, such as a bracket (15) which is fixed to a respective tooth (T), and the locking catch (40) includes a hook (42) for engaging the end portion (13) of the arm which projects distally (rearwardly) of the tube (22). The catch is easy for the user to engage and disengage, but when engaged effectively locks the arms of the inner bow from accidental withdrawal from the respective tubes (22).

A muscular expansion bumper (110) appliance is optionally removable from a patient's mouth and includes a wire form member formed in a U-shape with the free (112, 114) ends which may be removably secured to buccal tubes. The wire form member supports at least one side pad (124, 126) which overlies one or both of the upper or lower posterior teeth to hold the user's cheeks away from those teeth to permit lateral posterior expansion. The side pads (124, 126) are formed by plate members (132) secured to the wire form member covered with a plastic material. The plastic material can be trimmed to custom fit the appliance to the user and the appliance comes in varying sizes.
