Indirect bonding trays for orthodontic treatment are made from a model of the patient's dental arch that is manufactured using digital data and rapid prototyping processes. The model includes one or more guides for orienting an orthodontic appliance in a desired position on a model tooth of the dental arch model. A holder is connected to the archwire slot of the appliance and is brought into contact with the guide in order to move the appliance to its intended position for subsequent manufacture of the indirect bonding tray.

In an orthodontic bracket 1, 101, 201 including a base part 2, a bracket body 3 which is fixed to the base part 2, and a clip 4 having a substantially U-shape in section which is mounted on the bracket body 3 so as to move, an archwire slot 5 in a shape of a groove which can contain an archwire is provided on an upper face of the bracket body 3, a guide groove 9 for guiding a lower extended part 42 of the clip 4 is formed on a lower face of the bracket body 3, and the guide groove 9 is provided at a position below the archwire slot 5. In a state where the slot is closed, an end 45 of the lower extended part 42 of the clip 4 does not pass through the bracket body 3 up to a side face at an opposite side to the curved part of the bracket body 3. In this manner, it is possible to provide an orthodontic bracket which has a lower height and has less possibility that a clip may be detached.

247 METHOD FOR LOCALIZED HEAT TREATMENT OF ORTHODONTIC WIRES EP07716243 2007-01-03 EP1978884A4 2013-03-06 HILLIARD JACK KEITH
A method for localized heat treatment of a region of an orthodontic wire employs a hot air source having a maximum flow rate of approximately 6-10 liters per minute to selectively heat a small region of the wire above a predetermined temperature to change its metallurgical properties while the wire is held in a desired shape by an instrument or fixture. After the wire has been maintained at temperature for the required period of time, it can be released and allowed to cool. For example, these capabilities are well-suited for shape-setting localized regions of austenitic Ni-Ti wire and for stress-relieving and normalizing heavily-worked stainless steel wire.

The orthodontic bracket (20, 20a, 102) includes a contact point (40, 40a, 126) on its bracket body (21) and a contact point (27, 27a, 124) on a movable member (25) used to self-ligate an archwire (24) in an archwire slot (23) defined in the bracket body (21). The contact points are arranged such that different portions of a tip (12a, 12b, 76, 108, 138) on the hand tool (10, 10a, 10b, 10c, 70, 100, 130) can be placed in a contacting relationship with the contact points and used to place the movable member (25) in an open position. When the tip (12a, 12b, 76, 108, 138) is used, the tip (12a, 12b, 76, 108, 138) applies a force to the first and second contact points effective to move the movable member (25) relative to the bracket body (21) with negligible force transferred from the tip (12a, 12b, 76, 108, 138) to the tooth.

252 METHOD AND INSTRUMENT FOR RELEASING AN ORTHODONTIC ARCHWIRE FROM AN ORTHODONTIC APPLIANCE EP02725437.4 2002-03-29 EP1458303B1 2007-06-27 GEORGAKIS, Evangelos, G.; BINDER, Oscar, M.; CLEARY, James, D.
A method and hand instrument are provided for releasing an archwire from an archwire slot of an orthodontic appliance that has a latch. In the method, at least one leg of the hand instrument is placed along a tooth-facing side of the archwire and the instrument is manipulated in order to urge the archwire in a direction toward the latch. The archwire is pressed against the latch with sufficient force to open the latch and release the archwire from the archwire slot. The hand instrument preferably includes two legs with a cam section located between the legs. The cam section contacts the appliance while a shaft of the instrument is rocked in order to press the archwire against the latch.

An instrument for debonding an orthodontic bracket from a surface of a tooth includes first and second plier portions coupled for pivotal movement relative to one another. Each plier portion has a respective handle and a jaw with a respective bracket engaging portion. The instrument further includes a lever arm that is pivotally movable relative to the first and second plier portions and having a tooth engaging member on a first end. In one embodiment, the tooth engaging member is positioned on the lever arm such that it is moved between a jaw and the tooth surface when the bracket engaging portions are engaged with the orthodontic bracket and a second end of the lever arm is pivotally manipulated in a direction toward a handle of the plier portions. In another embodiment, at least part of at least one of the plier portions is flexible relative to the lever arm such that the lever arm moves the tooth engaging member relative to a jaw of the plier portions after the bracket engaging portions are engaged with the orthodontic bracket and the handles and lever arm pivotally manipulated in directions toward one another.

255 Orthodontic retainer elements EP06017642.7 2001-04-26 EP1723925A1 2006-11-22 Amundsen, Ole Christian

A dental retainer device for stabilization, so-called retention, of pairs of teeth or groups of teeth in a lower jaw and/or an upper jaw in orthodontic treatment. The retainer device is formed of a pair (2) of retainer elements, consisting of two preferably individual, but in the position of use cooperating, retainer elements (4, 6). Each of the retainer elements (4, 6) is formed with i.a. a retainer approximal surface (16, 18), the retainer approximal surfaces (16, 18) being formed complementary relative to one another. In use, one or more pairs (2) of retainer elements is/are positioned and secured with its/their individual elements (4, 6) preferably on the inner face of a tooth (20, 22) each of a pair of adjacent teeth, so that in the position of use the retainer approximal surfaces (16, 18) bear on each other and support, possibly lock, each other. Thereby pairs of teeth or groups of teeth are stabilized while it is possible at the same time to carry out normal dental hygiene by means of a toothbrush, dental floss or toothpicks, which is otherwise difficult to carry out when known retainers are used.
