Apparatus for performing reactions involving the formation of a solid phase from a liquid phase comprises a rotatable drum into which the liquid phase is introduced, as by spraying and scraper means arranged above the liquid introducing means for detaching solid phase from the upper part of the drum so that it can fall into intercepting means for conveying the solid phase out through an opening in one end wall of the drum. The drum conveniently forms the upper part of a tower reactor that can be heated or cooled and in which an after-treatment can be performed on the solid phase.

WHERE R MAY BE AMINO IN ANY OPEN RING POSITION OF HYDROXYL IN THE 2, 5 AND 8 RING POSITIONS WHEN THE AMINO GROUP IS IN THE 1 POSITION, TO ONTAIN AN AMINE-MODIFIED POLYMER, WHEN THE RESULTING REACTION PRODUCT IS BLENDED WITH AN APPROPRIATE CURING AGENT, SUCH AS AN ALDEHYDE, THE COMPOSITIONS CURE VERY RAPIDLY AT AMBIENT TEMPERATURE, WHEN PIECES OF WOOD OR OTHER MATERIALS ARE SPACED WITH THE PREFERRED ADHESIVES EMPLOYING THE RESIN COMPOSITIONS OF THIS INVENTION AND BROUGHT INTO CONTACT WITH ANOTHER WOOD SURFACE THE BOND STRENGTH DEVELOPS WITHIN MINUTES. THE DURABILITY, STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY OF THE ADHESIVES OF THIS INVENTION UNDER ADVERSE WEATHERING CONDITIONS ARE EXCELLENT.
DESCRIBED HEREIN ARE REACTION PRODUCTS HAVING PARTICULAR UTILITY AS RAPID CURING ADHESIVES FOR WOOD AND OTHER MATERIALS, AND PROCESS FOR MAKING THE RESIN COMPOSITIONS. THE PRODUCTS ARE MADE BY REACTING AN ALDEHYDE CONDENSATION POLYMER HAVING REACTIVE ALKYLOL GROUPS, SUCH AS A PHENOL-FORMALDEHYDE CONDENSATION POLYMER, WITH AN AMINOAPHTHALENE HAVING THE FORMULA:

175 Nitroso and oxime containing polymers US13616961 1961-09-06 US3268479A 1966-08-23 MARTEL ROCK F
The invention comprises nitrogen-containing polymers consisting of benzoid or quinoid nuclei linked by substituted or unsubstituted methylene groups at one ortho position and at either the other ortho or the para position, the remaining ortho or para position on each nucleus having an oxynitrogen group which is (a) NO or N(NO)OM (where M is a cation) when the I position of the nucleus is substituted by OH, NHR, NO or N(NO)OM (where R is a hydrocarbon radical or hydrocarbon ether radical) and the nucleus is benzoid, or (b) the oxynitrogen group is NOH when the I position is occupied by O, NR or NOH and the nucleus is quinoid. The polymers are obtained by reacting a condensation product of an aldehyde or ketone with a molar excess of phenol or a secondary aniline, with a nitrite to obtain a nitroso substituted resin, e.g. containing units of formula: (-NHR is present instead of -OH when a secondary aniline is used to form the initial polymer); the units of these polymers are tautomeric isomers of the corresponding oxime units. These polymers may be reacted with hydroxylamine to obtain quinone oxime imine polymers, e.g. containing units of formula: When these polymers are reacted with nitric oxide and a base the polymers obtained contain N-nitrosohydroxylamine salt units, i.e.: where T is OM or R and R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon ether radicals. Finally, these polymers may be reacted with an acid to obtain polymers containing units of formula: where Z is NO or NHR. The polymers may be used in adhesive compositions together with chlorinated rubber, brominated dichlorobutadiene polymer, solvent, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide and carbon black. Examples are given.
