Knives, cleaning.-A holder 9 adapted to be reciprocated transversely with respect to cleaning pads 1, 2 is provided with notches 10 to engage the reduced portions of the knives between the main portions and the bolsters. The pads are hinged together and are each covered by a cleaning cover 6 secured by means of wedge-shaped strips 8 in grooves 7. The pad 2 is provided with holes to receive guiding rods 12 secured to the holder 9. In a modified construction three pads are hingedly connected the two pairs of adjacent surfaces being provided with cleaning covers. Two adjacent covers serve for cleaning the knives, the other two covers for drying the knives. The lower and the middle pad have holes for the guiding-rods of the knife-holder.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 two upper plates E, E<1> are hinged to a larger lower plate D, thus furnishing two cleaners, which may be used for wet and dry cleaning respectively.

Knives, forks, and spoons, cleaning.-A hand appliance for cleaning and polishing knives, forks, spoons, and the like comprises a handle a of wood or metal formed with a cavity b adapted to receive a quantity of polishing powder and which is closed by a plug c of cork, soft wood, &c. having a central bore communicating with the cavity and grooved to take the prongs of a fork. The handle a is formed in one with, or is connected to, a foot or base f on which is fixed a pad g of semi-rigid material such as sole leather, gutta-percha, &c. and a pad i of sheep skin, leather, or other soft material. Pieces of emery cloth are cut as shown in Fig. 10, and each piece is folded along the dotted lines and is fixed to the base over the pads g and i and held in position by screws as shown in Fig. 11. The plug end c is adapted to put the finishing polish on the articles, and for those articles which have a concave surface the plug c is replaced by one having a convex end.

Knives, cleaning.-In knife-cleaners of the kind in which the knife is reciprocated between upper and lower pads pressed together by hand or by a spring, shaped pieces Q of wood and cork, covered with linoleum &c., are fitted to the upper and lower members C, A. The upper member may be loosely guided on upright rods B, Fig. 1, or within upright frame parts B, Fig. 4, and pressure may be applied by hand through a handle D, or by a spring L with an adjusting screw M. A powder box G, Fig. 3, may be fitted to the upper member, the powder passing to the surfaces through perforations H, F controlled by a slide I or by the movement of the box, In a further modification, the upper member is mounted only upon a central rod projecting up from the base, and may be rotated to expose fresh parts of the surfaces to the knife. The base may be fitted with a recess to receive a. powder receptacle, or may be provided with a tray to catch waste powder.

Knives, cleaning. - A cleaner, wherein the knives are rubbed between surfaces pressed against a base-plate by an upper plate pivoted to a hand-lever, is designed so that all the cleaning-powder is retained within the limits of the apparatus, and the pads are readily removable. The apparatus comprises a baseplate fitted with side walls b on which a number of cleaning-pads e are guided vertically by projections f. A member i, depending from a hand-lever c, carries a pivoted presser-plate j. After rotating the lever and plate j through 180 degrees, the pads may be raised above the projections f and then moved endways out of the apparatus. The base-plate is extended at each end beyond the pads to form receptacles l, which act in conjunction with the side walls to retain the powder.
