121 Method of controlling cooling of hot-rolled steel sheet and system therefor US730633 1985-05-06 US4648916A 1987-03-10 Masahiko Morita; Osamu Hashimoto
In controlling the cooling of a hot-rolled steel sheet after hot rolling, a target value of a transformation rate required for obtaining mechanical properties ultimately expected from the hot-rolled steel plate is previously determined, a rate of gamma to alpha transformed fraction of the hot-rolled steel sheet in a section in which the cooling is controlled is detected by transformed fraction detectors, and an elapsed time from the start of cooling is measured to determine the transformation rate of the steel sheet in a cooling stage, the conditions of cooling being controlled so that the transformation rate can coincide with the target value.
122 Production of aluminium alloy strip US401155 1982-07-23 US4428782A 1984-01-31 David J. Walker; Kenneth Amor
In the heat treatment of aluminium alloy strip, in which hardening of the material is effected by heat treatment to dissolve pre-existing precipitates in the metal matrix followed by quenching and ageing, the electrical conductance of the strip after quenching is measured using a conductivity probe scanned across the width of the strip, the heating being controlled in accordance with the measured conductance so as to obtain uniform electrical conductance across the width of the strip. This measured electrical conductance has a close correlation with the required mechanical properties. A transmitter producing an electromagnetic field is moved across the strip and a receiver, picking up signals due to the eddy currents in the strip, provides an output automatically controlling the movement of flux modifiers of a transverse flux induction heater to control the strip heating.
123 Process and apparatus for heat treating steel using infrared radiation US61471 1979-07-27 US4229236A 1980-10-21 James E. Heath
Process and apparatus for stress relieving steel sheet, strip, strapping, wire and the like involves the use of high intensity shortwave infrared radiation to heat the steel to the desired stress relieve temperature. The apparatus comprises a furnace having opposing spaced-apart parallel banks of infrared radiation lamps. An electronic programmable controller controls the intensity of the lamps along the banks' length. A roller arrangement is used in passing such steel through the furnace. A device measures the linear speed of the steel. The controller adjusts lamp intensity, as determined by a program based on the signal received from the line speed measuring device. The controller, according to its program, maintains a minimum lamp intensity when the steel is stationary. The controller increases the lamp intensity to a predetermined level to preheat the steel to ensure on line start-up that the steel emerges at the desired stress relieve temperature. The responsiveness of the infrared heating unit provides significant advances in the art of stress relieving steel and economines.
