PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for preventing formation of a diphenylalkane as a by-product to produce a monoalkyl aromatic hydrocarbon in higher yield by using a feed aromatic hydrocarbon, olefin and diluent composed of an alkyl derivative for the reaction in the presence of zeolite β catalyst. SOLUTION: This method is to (A) send a feed aromatic hydrocarbon, olefin and diluent composed of an alkyl derivative to the alkylation zone, and (B) react the aromatic hydrocarbon and olefin with each other in the presence of zeolite β catalyst, to produce the monoalkyl aromatic hydrocarbon. Molar ratio of the phenyl group per alkyl group corresponding to the olefin is (0.75:1) to (25:1), and the olefin content, based on the feed aromatic hydrocarbon, olefin and diluent composed of an alkyl derivative sent to the alkylation zone, is lower than the level given by the formula MWO/(6.17×MWA+MWO) wt.% (MWO is molecular weight of the olefin and MWA is molecular weight of the aromatic hydrocarbon). |

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive method for recycling an expanded polystyrene by utilizing a specific fraction of a petroleum hydrocarbon having powers for both dissolving and precipitating the expanded polystyrene.
SOLUTION: This inexpensive method for recycling an expanded polystyrene is provided by charging a fragmented expanded polystyrene into a fraction of a petroleum hydrocarbon which is a gasoline having 50-165°C boiling point and conventionally used for a power fuel, etc., and dissolving the expanded polystyrene at normal temperatures for 20-30 min. The expanded cells of the expanded polystyrene which are a buoyancy source are dissolved by the fraction and the expanded polystyrene is naturally precipitated. The resultant precipitate is then scooped up with a fork or a large-sized scissors-shaped tool with fork blades, opened onto a board or a large dish, mixed with an extender pigment and converted into a product. Otherwise, the precipitate may be extended into about 5 m/m thickness on the large-sized dish and passed through a steam spraying route to blow away a very small amount of the residual oil in the polystyrene to some extent and dried with heat or hot air. The resultant polystyrene is then sent as fragments to the recycling.

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound in high efficiency, by trans-alkylating naphthalene or monoalkylnaphthalene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst, separating and recovering the objective dialkylnaphthalene and recycling the remaining part to the trans-alkylation step.
CONSTITUTION: Naphthalene and/or a monoalkylnaphthalene are trans-alkylated by contacting with a polyalkylbenzene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst (especially preferably selected from HY zeolite, silica, titania, alumina, boria and mordenite), the produced dialkylnaphthalene is separated and recovered and the remaining polyalkylbenzene and naphthalenes other than dialkylnaphthalene are recycled to the trans-alkylation step. A benzene compound having reduced alkyl content by the trans-alkylation reaction may be regenerated by alkylation with olefin or lower alcohol and used as the polyalkylbenzene.
