HEYNER AUGUSTUS OTTO |
5326. Heyner, A. O. March 3. Bookbinding. - R elates to the binding and rebinding of books. The leaves are divided into sections a, and each section is provided at the front and back with a linen strip b which projects beyond the back of the section. The sections are machined sideways at d, the end stitches being tied over the backs of the sections. The sections are then sewn through the tapes k, Fig. 3, the kettle stitch g being overcast or oversewn into the tapes. The book is glued by passing the brush across the back, thus laying down the projecting linen strips b. The cloth joints m are sewn by side stitching l which passes through the end sections. |

AYLING GEORGE FREDERICK |
7140. Ayling, G. F. March 25. Bookbinding.-Relates to a method of rebinding much-used books, applicable also to the binding of new books issued in single sheets, such as plans, maps, &c. With old books, the cover is removed, and the back edges are cut off by a guillotine, thus transforming the folded sections into single sheets. This surface is glued, and, when it is dry, saw-cuts are made for the final kettle-stitch sewing. The block of sheets is then divided into a number of sections which are separately lock-stitched close to the back edge. This stitching is rolled into the paper, and the sections are then finally sewn together. |

The invention is a method of inserting additional printed pages into books that are, or will be, converted into storage-books. Storage-books, book-boxes or secret storag e- books are boxes made from any form of bound paper (books). The books of paper are converted into storage-boxes by hollowing out the pages to create a cavity. False or n ew content pages are introduced to storage-books for the purpose of changing the subjec t matter of the book and/or to enhance the subject matter that appears in the book. |

The apparatus consists of a support (10) for a book and/or a table to hold the page or cover to be treated. The support has walls (22, 24) lying in different planes and both the support and table can be adjusted to the size of the book. The support has edges (40, 42) which project to hold the spine of the book, the distance between them being adjusted according to the width of the spine. It also has a mechanism (54) for adjusting the angle of at least one supporting wall, and a retaining element (60) for he edge of a page or cover. |

A-method of bookbinding comprises applying adhesive to a spine 22 of a book 12, formed from a plurality of individual pages 10, by rotating adhesive-carrying threaded means 24 against the spine 22. The pages 10, whilst being clamped between opposed jaws 14, may be fanned to the left by extending piston rod 32b and then to the right by extending piston rod 32a, to give double fanning. The book 12, jaws 14, and double fanning forcing means, including the piston rods 32a, 32b, may all be carried by a reciprocable carriage (38 figure 3) capable of translational movement perpendicularly to the plane of the paper, to move the spine 22 across the threaded means 24. The spine 22 is fanned to the left during movement across threaded portion 26 and is fanned to the right during return movement across threaded portion 28. |
