Reduction of porosity and control of graphitization in the centrifugal casting of tubular metal articles are achieved providing on the active surface of a metal mold by a densified and countoured lining of binderless particulate refractory material, at least 20% by weight of the particles in all of the lining being angular particles, at least 25% by weight of the particles in that portion of the lining in contact with the metal mold having predetermined particles size and/or thermal conductivity. The lining may comprise both a primary layer, formed of particles having good thermal conductivity and/or a relatively larger particle size, and a facing layer formed, e.g., of a milled refractory flour.

An improved method is utilized to make a mold for a cast product having a plurality of spaced apart surfaces. Although the method could be used for forming molds for different products, the method is advantageously used to form a mold for a cast product having a plurality of airfoils disposed in a circular array. To form the mold, a plurality of airfoil pattern segments are placed in a circular array with surfaces of the segments abutting at joints which are free of material interconnecting the segments. A coating of liquid ceramic mold material is applied over the airfoil pattern segments. Since the joints between the airfoil pattern segments are free of interconnecting material, the liquid ceramic mold material can flow into the joints. After the ceramic mold material has been dried and the airfoil pattern segments disposed of, the ceramic mold material which entered the joints between the airfoil pattern segments forms a plurality of relatively thin projections from the main wall of the mold. These thin projections are broken away before the product is cast in the mold. During the application of the ceramic coating to the airfoil pattern segments, the relatively flexible wax airfoil pattern segments are advantageously supported by a relatively rigid annular pattern member which is disposed outwardly of the airfoil segments.

In making a mould, pattern or core of intricate shape, e.g. a mould or pattern for a ship's propeller or blade, points on a required surface are established in a mass of moulding material, e.g. sand and binder in a box 13, by the insertion of a pin 11 to positions determined by a measuring device (1-10), Fig. 1 (not shown), which may be programme-controlled. A wiper is then guided by hand to remove superfluous material to expose the points and thus produce the required surface. The points are marked by balls 16 dropped into the impressions left by the pin 11 or released from the pin; they may be marked by ink, by a heated pin or marker acting on a thermosetting binder or by CO 2 acting on a waterglass binder. A surface 15 may be exposed with marker balls 16 and then further material is heaped on it on a layer of separating material and the process repeated with marker balls 18 to produce a solid pattern, e.g. of a single propeller blade. A cope may be formed above the pattern in situ to form a mould, or the pattern may be removed for this purpose or used to make a mould for casting a further pattern.
