CONSTITUTION: α-ZrNCl obtained by heating ZrCl
4 at 300W350°C in ammonia gas is heated at 500W650°C in ammonia gas stream to obtain β-ZrNCl in yellowish green color. The β-ZrNCl and a small amt. of ZrCl
4 are packed in a tube and are heated at 500W1,000°C for 5W20hr to prepare the solid lubricant consisting of lamellar β-ZrNX compd. (where X is Cl, Br or solid soln. of Cl and Br).
EFFECT: The lubricant has a low reactivity with substrates such as metal on a frictional surface and maintains excellent lubricating property for a long period even under high vacuum.
