CONSTITUTION: An aq. soln. with the atomic ratio of Mg/(Mg+Al) 0.60W0.85 is prepared using a water sol. Al salt and Mg salt. The soln. is mixed with a Na
2 CO
3 soln. to form precipitates at pH 9W12, esp. 10W11. The precipitates are filtered and washed to obtain a solid soln. precursor. On the other hand, an excess amt. of a NaOH or Na
2 CO
3 soln. is added to an aq. Ni salt soln. to form nickel hydroxide or basic nickel carbonate precipitates, which are filtered and washed. The precipitates and the above precursor are then mixed well in water, and the resulting precipitates are filtered, dried, and calcined at 350W770°C to prepare a low temp. steam reforming catalyst for hydrocarbons based on an Al-MgO solid soln. contg. 25W150 wt% of a Ni component, mainly nickel oxide.
