CONSTITUTION: At least a part of the stock coal is separated into a coarse particle coal fraction and a fine particle coal fraction before crushing, and the fine particle coal having high water content and small particle size is dried and pressed to obtain briquettes, which are disintegrated if the size is too large and the strength is too high. The briquettes are mixed with powdered coal prepared by crushing the coarse particle coal. When the separation of the stock coal is carried out on only a part of the stock coal, the above mixture is further mixed with powdered coal obtained by crushing the unseparated stock coal to adjust the water-content of the product. The obtained coal has low dust emission in the charging into a coke oven, and gives coke having excellent strength. The separated fine particle coal fraction may be mixed with one or more carbonaceous materials such as low-grade coal, non-caking coal, semi-coke, coke powder, etc., and dried.
