CONSTITUTION: A raw material 4 which is provided with a closing layer 1 for closing the cells 5 in the surface layer with a closing material 2 or is contained in a sealed vessel 3 so as to contain a gas or solid treating agent for removing harmful elements is charged into the molten metal 6 which exists in a melting furnace having a heating element 8 and a lining 7 and is beforehand partly melted. Then, the material melts in the part where the layer 1 or the vessel 3 contacts with the metal 6 and the molten metal 6 enters the material to the position where the gaseous pressure therein and the pressure of the molten metal balance. The material 4 here continues to melt while containing the treating agent therein, and the material to be treated reacts effectively with harmful elements. The product of reaction floats as slag and is separated from the metal 6.
