The distance between the surface 5 of the baked coke cake 14 extruded from a carbonizing chamber 2 by an extruding ram 10 and the projector-receiver 13 is detected continuously through the intermediary of the reflection of the laser beam and the change thereof in the passage of time is recorded, whereby the shape of the surface 5 is measured.
