CONSTITUTION: A synchronous motor 4 is operated via an AC power supply AC, a forward converter 1 and a reverse converter 2. When motor rotating speed is less than predetermined level, a speed judging circuit 15 produces a low level signal, and a phase shifter 13 produces an arc signal that the control lead angle is zero. In this case, the limiting value of the current limiting circuit 8 is set at low value. When the motor rotating speed is raised higher than predetermined value, the circuit 15 produces a high level signal. Thus, the control lead angle is so altered that the reverse converter 3 can naturally commutate, and the limiting value of the circuit 8 is altered to large value. Thus, the limiting value of the circuit 8 is altered to vary the current simultaneously upon variation of the control lead angle to thereby prevent the torque of the motor from varying.
