CONSTITUTION: An interatomic force microscope include a tip which s mounted on a microminature cantilever. When the tip scans a surface of a sample to be observed, an interatomic force induces the displacement of the tip. A beam is transmitted to the cantilever to detect the direction of the cantilever and is reflected therefrom. In a preferred embodiment, the reflected beam is detected by a position sensing detector which may preferably be a bi-cell 40.
