Then, a second key lever 18 also carrying thereon at least fifty sounds of the Japanese syllabary is pushed down to turn link 30, thereby shifting arm 28, link 26 and arm 25 in the direction of arrow 99 and thus bringing type bar 22 of a longitudinal type selecting mechanism 19 into contact with resilient stopper member 23, so that typing operation is started onto platen 20 having a typewriting paper wound therearound. When a character is typed with bar 22 being pounded onto platen 20, stopper member 73 attached to reel 58 is turned, while reeling out type band 61, to the position where stopper 71 is attracted to magnet 67 by string 63, and stopped at the positin.
