In this display device, a composite containing an tungsten oxide and titanium is used as the opposite electrode 4. This electrode 4 is prepared by mixing the powders of a tungsten oxide such as WO

18 O
49 or WO
3 and titanium or its hidride at a ratio (in weight) of 95 : 5 to 5 : 95 and by press-molding the mixture. The resultant molding may be used after it is sintered at a temperature higher than about 700°C.
