CONSTITUTION: A transparent electrode 12, electrochromic EC layer 16 and insulation film 17 are laminated on a transparent front substrate 10. A Ni electrode 13 and EC layer 16 are formed on a back substrate 11, forming a counter electrode. The substrates 10, 11 are inserted with porous ceramics 18 for white background and are maintained at a fixed spacing by a spacer 14, between which is then sealed electrolyte 15. Then, the film which is chemically and electrochemically stable to the electrolyte 15 and is sufficiently mechanically strong may be obtained for the counter electrode and therefore the EC display device of a long life and low voltage driving may be obtained.
