CONSTITUTION: Magnetotactic bacteria are cultivated in a cultivation apparatus having water bottom precipitates, e.g. mud, sludge, etc., suitable for growth of the magnetotactic bacteria of ≤7.5cm, preferably 2W3cm thickness deposited on each shelf of multi-stage shelves in a culture fluid, e.g. nutrient culture medium, etc., prepared by adding distilled water without inhibiting growth of the magnetotactic bacteria and one or more of succinic acid, tryptophan, glucose, maltose and acetate or structures obtained by supporting with liquid-permeable supports, e.g. filter paper, etc., from both sides are arrange in many layers to provide layers of the water bottom precipitates at room temperature of about 25°C, preferably about 20W30°C and multiplied in a short period. The above-mentioned cultivation method is also applicable to cultivation of other slightly aerobic bacteria, e.g. Spirillum volutans, living in the water bottom precipitates.
