CONSTITUTION: D-Asparagine is reacted with p-toluenesulfonyl halogenide, and subjected to Hofmann rearrangement to obtain the compound of formula I. The compound is reacted with excessive oxalyl chloride in dioxane, and reduced with HBr in acetic acid to obtain the objective D-N-β-oxalyl-α,β-diaminopropionic acid of formula II. The L-isomer of the compound II existing in Panax notoginseng E.H. chen, a plant of Aradiaceae, has hemostatic activity and blood platelet increasing activity; however, it acts as a neurotoxin when administered in high dose. In contrast with the above, the D-isomer has no neurotoxic activity and nevertheless has similar hemostatic and blood platelet increasing activity to the L-isomer.
