USE: Useful as a selective herbicide and a drug having analgesic action, etc. The D-isomer has the herbicidal activity of twice or more that of the racemic modification. The herbicide is almost nontoxic to broad-leaved crops, e.g. soybeans, and has very high safety for phytotoxicity and a very wide application period and ranges of places, concentrations, etc. There is no fear for the acute toxicity to humans, cattle and fishes because the herbicide is safely usable in a low concentration.
PROCESS: An anilinophenol of formula II is reacted with an L-propionic ester of formula III (Hal is halogen) in an inert solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, (DMF), in the presence of an acid binder under refluxing and heating for 3W6hr to give the compound of formulaI. Sodium carbonae, etc. is preferred for the acid binder.
