USE: Antitumor agents and antifungals, capable of prolonging the survival time of cancerated warm-blooded animals, having a powerful mitosis inhibitory actions, and usable for treating plant diseases due to the antifungal and antiprotozoan actions.
PROCESS: Maytansinol or dechloromaytansinol is carbamoylated with a compound of formula II: (Z is halogen) in a solvent in the presence of a base to give the compound of formula I. The starting material can be obtained by reducing ansamitocins of formula III: (R
3 is acetyl group, etc.) which are metabolites of microorganisms of the genus Nocardia.
