273 Compressed upholstered furniture assembly kit and method of manufacture US08855921 1997-05-14 US06267446B1 2001-07-31 Roy M. Wieland; Blaine L. Wieland
A compressed upholstered furniture assembly kit, method of manufacture and assembled article of furniture. A consumer-assembled article of furniture having upholstered portions is provided in a manner which comports with the shipping, warehousing and display constraints of retailers and which accommodates a variety of consumer decorating tastes. The kit includes frame members and reduced volume padding. This padding, when exposed to air at atmospheric pressure expands to its natural size and shape. The padding may include a porous protective cover which is applied prior to reducing its volume, and may also include a bladder to which fluid is added to provide further expansion. The expanded padding provides cushions which are covered with separately available decorative, fitted covers to form upholstered pieces, which are then applied to the assembled frame to form a completed article of furniture. Alternatively, the cushions may be applied to the assembled frame prior to being covered by the decorative fabric covers. The separately available fabric covers are of various decorative patterns and colors and can be used interchangeably with the assembled frame and its cushions.
274 Rectilinear cross-sectional beam furniture, furniture design and furniture production US922872 1997-09-03 US06017093A 2000-01-25 Thomas F. Moser
A furniture design and manufacturing system utilizing initial selection of a design "vocabulary" of rectilinear cross-sectional shape "beams" that integrate structural and aesthetic considerations, and utilizing panels coordinated in thickness to be received in dados and rabbets in the beams. Beam cross sections generally have a predetermined incremental size difference, or multiple of the incremental size difference, so that beams inter-fit and cooperate with panels and other beams in a graduated manner permitting a sort of "nesting" when beams, or panels and beams, are used together. This facilitates joinery in furniture using such components because, among other reasons, mortises tend to fall in thicker components than those having tenons. Production of beam stock and, if desired, panel production precedes identification of a furniture item to be produced, facilitating economies in production.
275 Modular chair construction and method of assembly US224675 1998-12-31 US5979988A 1999-11-09 Kurt R. Heidmann; Brian L. Christensen; Michael W. Haan; Glenn A. Knoblock; Eric T. McClure; Noe Palacios; Brian H. Root; David D. Sayers; Robert M. Scheper; Patrick P. Schwoerer; James P. Steffens; Greg A. VanStee
A chair construction and method for building a chair having selected features are provided. The construction includes a plurality of interchangeable different components including different base assemblies, back assemblies, seats, arms, and chair controls that can be selected to provide different features on a "customized" chair. The different chair controls are constructed from a selected one of a plurality of interchangeable energy modules and a selected one of a plurality of interchangeable seat support modules. All components include standardized connections for engaging the related components, and further include various mechanisms and designs so that by selecting particular components, a chair having various features and appearances can be provided. For example, the plurality of interchangeable seat support modules includes a non-adjustable seat support module, a seat-angle-adjustable seat support module, and a seat-depth-adjustable seat support module. Also, the plurality of interchangeable chair control modules include a non-lockable energy module, a back lockable energy module, and a multi-position backstop energy module, each connectable to a selected one of the aforementioned seat support modules. The modularity of these components facilitates assembly including on-site assembly, repair, and post-assembly upgrading of the chair. Further, the seat support is connected by removable pivot pins to allow assembly, retrofit and/or modification in the field. The tension adjustment mechanism, the seat height actuator mechanism, and the pivot connections are constructed for durability, performance, assembleability, compactness of design, and to minimize the number of and complexity of parts. The method includes selecting modules from a menu of interconnectable/interchangeable modules to construct a chair control, and further selecting modules from a menu of interchangeable components to construct a chair having selected features.
276 Seating system, especially for multiseat benches US76930 1998-05-13 US5957529A 1999-09-28 Klaus Schrewe
A plurality of seating units, each of which may have two or more seats on a common frame, can be connected to a central support by plug connectors. The central support has a support column and a housing which can be clamped together upon angular adjustment to allow the seating units to assume various angles relative to one another. The central column can accommodate an approximately round table.

279 Modular furniture with interlocking components US618465 1996-03-15 US5738414A 1998-04-14 Roy M. Wieland; Joel D. Alberda; Donald E. Neufer
A modular furniture assembly comprising interconnected frame, back, and arms. The frame has walls mounting the back and arms. The frame walls include flanges and the back and arms include slits, with each flange being slidably received in a corresponding slit to secure the back and arms to the walls. Another aspect involves the covering which is disposed over components of the modular furniture. A component body has an exterior surface over which a covering extends. The body includes a channel and the covering includes a strip having a size and shape approximately matching the internal contour of the channel. The strip easily slides into the channel to secure the covering over the outer contour, while the channel configuration prevents the movement of the strip except in the sliding direction.
