A magnesium treatment for removing water-soluble impurities in a process for making crystalline sodium carbonate, bicarbonate, or sulfite. A waste comprising such impurities is treated with a magnesium compound to form water-insoluble matter which is removed to form a purified solution. The treatment may be performed on a solution which contains the waste and optionally dissolved calcined trona. The purified solution may be used as a feedstock to form crystalline soda ash, and/or used as a reactant to produce crystalline sodium sulfite or bicarbonate via reaction with SO2 or CO2. In preferred embodiments, the waste may comprise a purge or weak liquor, a reclaimed solid, or combinations thereof. The water-soluble impurities may be silicates and/or foam-causing organics, and the waste may contain sodium bicarbonate, sodium sesquicarbonate, and/or one or more sodium carbonate hydrates, such as decahydrate.

The process of the present invention has great value due to its simple steps, low production cost and reduction of environmental problems.

The present invention describes a procedure for the removal of sodium sulphate from a phosphate solution that has been used for absorption of SO2 from flue gases, whereby a precipitate forms when the absorption solution is regenerated by evaporation. In this procedure a part of the precipitate is separated from its solution and treated with water and SO2 for transformation of disodium-hydrogen phosphate into monosodium dihydrogen phosphate in the aqueous solution, whereby the sodium sulphate remains undissolved and is removed by filtration, whereafter the filtrate is added back to the main process.

The invention also relates to the use of the prepared composition for the manufacture of dithionite.

The invention relates to a process for preparing potassium thiosulfate, potassium sulfite or potassium bisulfite comprising the following steps:

Step (1a): providing a potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate solution for neutralizing acid forming components such as dissolving SO2 or H2S;

Step (1b): providing an SO2 contacting solution, containing at least some potassium sulfite or potassium bisulfite or potassium thiosulfate;

Step (2): providing SO2 gas;

Step (3): reacting these to absorb the SO2 gas and to form an intermediate reaction mixture comprising potassium sulfite, or potassium bisulfite or a mixture thereof, and optionally recovering the potassium sulfite, or potassium bisulfite or a mixture thereof, and/or optionally using steps 4 and 5;

Step (4): adding sulfur or sulfide containing compound containing sulfur having the oxidation state of 0, -2 or of between 0 and -2 to the reaction mixture and optionally potassium hydroxide or potassium carbonate, and reacting the mixture under suitable conditions to form potassium thiosulfate; and

Step (5): recovering the potassium thiosulfate, and optionally concentrating the potassium thiosulfate.
