A vehicle restraint (10) restrains a vehicle at a loading dock (14) by engaging a rail (28) that is part of the vehicle's support frame, wherein the rail is normally used for adjusting the position of the vehicle's rear wheels. In a preferred embodiment, the restraint includes an adjustable- length arm attachable between the vehicle and the loading dock. The arm includes a retractable or removable pin (40) that engages one of a series of holes (32) in the rail or releasably engages some feature of the loading dock. In some examples, the restraint clamps onto the rail, particularly if the rail has no available open holes for a pin to be inserted. In some cases, the restraint also provides the vehicle with vertical support.

The invention relates to a flying shear comprising at least one drum which is equipped with a blade, whose peripheral speed can be synchronised with the feed rate of the rolling strip and comprising an anvil which is located opposite the drum and optionally a controllable adjusting device allocated to said drum. The flying shear is configured in such a way, that wear is minimised and that extended tolerances are allowed during the production thereof, without impairing the cutting performance. This is achieved when the blade drum (2) is in the working position, by the retention of a space (8) between the anvil drum (3) and the blade drum (2) which ensures that the rolling strip (4) severs at its weakest point, as a result of the longitudinal forces which are exerted on said rolling strip (4).

51 Vehicle restraint EP89308130.7 1989-08-10 EP0356073A2 1990-02-28 Alexander, James C.

A vehicle restraint mountable against a dock face with a frame (20,24,28,30,32) uses a linearly extensible actuator (34) to move a flat plate restraining device (38) into a vehicle release or restraint position. The plate carries a bracket (40) having a cam profile (42) which via a connection (46) converts the linear movement of the actuator into rotational movement of the restraining plate. In the vehicle restraining position all loading on the restraining device is transmitted to the frame without any force component on the actuator.

A device (20) is provided for releasably securing a parked vehicle to an adjacent structure (D). The device (20) includes a carriage first section (21) affixed to the adjacent structure (D) and a vertically adjustable carriage second section (22) mounted on the first section (21) and biased to assume a predetermined elevated position. The second section (22) moves downwardly from the elevated position upon a predetermined external force being exerted thereon. A first means (35) is mounted on the carriage second section (22) for relative movement between an operative vehicle-locking mode (I) and an inoperative vehicle-release mode (II). A second means (38) is adjustably mounted on and substantially concealed by the carriage second section (22) and coacts therewith and the first means (35) to retain the latter in an operative mode. A manually actuated third means (37) is carried on the carriage second section (22) and is movable independently thereof to effect movement of the first means (35) from the inoperative mode (II) to the operative mode (I). The third means (37) normally assumes a substantially concealed position within the carriage second section (22). A manually actuated fourth means (55) is adjustably mounted on the carriage second section (22) and is engageable with the second means (38) to effect movement of the latter to a non-retaining position with respect to the first means (35). when the fourth means (55) is manually activated in one relative direction.

55 A releasable locking device EP82301431.1 1982-03-19 EP0064327A1 1982-11-10 Hipp, Steven J.; Hahn, Norbert

A releasable locking device, for securing a parked vehicle (B) to an adjacent upright structure (P), includes a first means (11,14) mounted on the upright structure (W) and a second means (23, 24) mounted on the first means (11, 14) for vertical movement relative thereto between operative and inoperative mode positions (I, II). When in an operative mode (I), the second means (23, 24) is in a raised position and engages a portion (B) of the parked vehicle. A third means (31 b, 22) releasably retains the second means (23, 24) in operative mode (I) and prevents accidental movement of the second means (23, 24) from operative mode (I) position to a lower inoperative mode position (II). The first means includes guides (14) for restricting movement of the second means (23, 24) to a substantially vertical path.

56 Releasable locking device EP80302495.9 1980-07-23 EP0025266A1 1981-03-18 Hipp, Steven J.

A device for retaining a parked vehicle against a loading dock or the like during loading or unloading thereof includes a pivotally mounted hook-like member movable between operative and inoperative modes. The member is secured to the front side of the loading dock (D) by a carriage (C) having a first section (13) on which the hook-like member is mounted, and a second section affixed to the dock front side (11). The first section (13) is adjustable relative to the second section in a substantially vertical plane. The first section (13) is biased to normally assume a predetermined rest position which is at a maximum elevation with respect to the roadway (R) supporting the vehicle. Power means is mounted on the carriage first section (13) and actuates the hook-like member between the operative and inoperative modes. When in an operative mode, the hook-like member interlocklingly engages the parked vehicle. When in an inoperative mode, the hook-like member assumes a vehicle-release position. Manual control means are provided for regulating the operation of the power means. The carriage first section (13) includes an outwardly projecting cam segment (13a) which is engaged by the vehicle when being maneuvered into a parked position and will cause the first section (13) to move vertically downwardly thereby enabling the member to interlockingly engage the vehicle in response to the manual adjustment ofthe control means.

There is disclosed a loading system that inserts skates (810) from a dock (800) into a trailer (100). Air sacs (1201, 1203, 120, 1206) underneath the skates are then inflated to lift a paper reel (501) off chocks (110, 120, 130). The skates are then retracted from the trailer back to the dock, thus removing the reel from the trailer and placing the reel over a conveyer (801) that forms part of the dock. The air sacs are then deflated and the weight of the reel is transferred to the conveyor. The reel is then conveyed to a printing press. In an embodiment, two adjacent reels are withdrawn from the trailer onto two adjacent conveyors. The adjacent conveyors displaced (1600, 1601) relative to the skates in order to separate the reels as they are transferred to the conveyors.

A vehicle restraint restricts the movement of a vehicle at a loading dock by engaging the vehicle's RIG (rear impact guard). The vehicle restraint includes a barrier carried by a vertically translatable track follower, the barrier being driven by a motor or some other type of power unit. A RIG sensor detects the RIG's horizontal position relative to the barrier and can periodically energize the motor to maintain the barrier in generally continuous contact with the RIG, even if the RIG moves horizontally away from the barrier. Detection of such horizontal movement of the RIG triggers the barrier to move accordingly to reduce a horizontal gap that may have formed between the RIG and the barrier.
