15 Method of and apparatus for applying protective jackets to books US88812 1993-07-08 US5498112A 1996-03-12 Dietmar Schwettmann; Siemen Garlichs
The application of protective jackets comprised of paper to a book is facilitated by minimizing bending stresses in the jacket paper in the fold areas where the jacket is wrapped around the opposed longitudinal edges of the book cover in the course of defining jacket retention flaps. The stresses are relieved by the metered, uniform moistening of the fold areas of the jacket to thereby diminish the flexual strength of the paper fibers in these areas.
16 Methods of an apparatus for wrapping jackets around books US802624 1977-06-02 US4100639A 1978-07-18 Gunter Dietrich
Paper jackets are automatically applied to hard cover books in a manner which provides a good fit between the jacket and book and insures against the jacket folds slipping free of the book covers during or immediately subsequent to jacket application. The books are supported with the covers opened outwardly, a jacket sheet is draped over the spine of the book, the jacket material is urged downwardly simultaneously from both sides so as to tightly conform to the book and the opposite edge portions of the jacket sheet are folded around the front edges of the book covers while applying heat to thereby define jacket flaps which slide inwardly when the book covers are reclosed.
17 Book jacketing apparatus US3742542D 1972-05-26 US3742542A 1973-07-03 KLUG H
Book jacketing apparatus comprises a vertical frame mounting a pair of clamp arms arranged for clamping the bunched leaves of a book as the open book cover is wrapped with a dust jacket. Drive means associated with the arms adjust them between a closed clamping position and an open release position. A lateral arm adjustment is provided to accommodate books of different thickness. A pivotal frame with associated reciprocating drive enables adjustment of the frame between a working position and an out of the way position, facilitating removal of the jacketed book from the apparatus.

19 APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR APPLYING A COVERING FILM TO A BOOK US14507186 2014-10-06 US20150096679A1 2015-04-09 Alan RYAN; Gerald RYAN
An apparatus is provided for applying a covering film to a book. The apparatus has a gate mechanism having open and closed states, which in the closed state presents a front surface against which a covering film may be overlaid. The spine of a book is pressed onto the covering film overlaying the front surface. The gate is then opened to admit the book to a space rearward of the gate beyond the front surface, such that the book draws the covering film into that space. A laminating mechanism is positioned rearwardly of the gate top receive the book and laminate the film against the front and rear covers to cover the book with the film.
20 Bookbinding method and bookbinding unit, and image-forming system US12172210 2008-07-11 US07984898B2 2011-07-26 Shigeyuki Sanmiya; Kazuyuki Kubota; Yoshito Nakagomi; Hiroshi Nakagomi; Hideya Fujihara; Atsushi Tsuchiya
First document/image data is printed onto a sequence of sheets that includes sheets of a given size, and sheet(s) of a size that in at least one dimension is larger than the sheets of the given size. At the same time the first document/image data is being printed, second document/image data, i.e., foldout data, is printed onto the outer margin, i.e., a foldout portion, of the sheet(s) of the larger size. The larger-size, foldout sheet(s) is then folded so as to be creased near its overlap with the given-size sheets, and is collated into the sequence of the given-size sheets to form a bundle that is then bound. Thereafter trimming to size the non-bound edge(s) of the bundle slices away the crease in the foldout sheet, leaving the foldout cut-away as an insert tucked into the booklet.
