An article forming system for forming at least one sheet of material into an article, such as a decorative flower pot cover for example, and a novel article formed utilizing such a system. The article forming system includes a male die, a female die and a platform having a support surface and an opening extending through the support surface. The female die is disposed generally within the opening in the platform with the upper end of the female die being disposed near the support surface. The article forming system includes means for slidingly holding portions of the sheet of material generally against portions of the support surface while permitting such held portions to slide on the support surface during the forming of the article for cooperating in forming a decorative border on the decorative flower pot cover type of article which flares generally away from the flower pot object when the decorative flower pot cover article is applied to the flower pot. The article formed in accordance with the present invention includes overlapping folds formed by overlapping portions of the sheet of material to bring portions of the sheet of material into bondable contact, the overlapping folds providing the mechanical strength necessary for the formed sheet of material to hold a predetermined shape thereby permitting the utilization of thinner sheets of material to form articles.

An apparatus and method for forming a sheet of material into an article, such as a flower pot cover, is provided. The apparatus includes a female die and a male die. A sheet of material is positioned between the male die and the female die. The male and female dies are shaped such that at least a portion of the male die is receivable in the opening of the female die to form the article. The apparatus further includes means for supplying a stream of air between the female die and the formed article to release the formed article from the female die and means for holding the formed article against the male die as the male die and the female die are positioned from a forming position to a discharge position whereby the formed article is removed from the female die.
6 Apparatus for forming a container or box from a blank US167233 1998-10-06 US6053854A 2000-04-25 Shun-Yu Ynag
An apparatus is used to form a container from a blank which has innermost fold lines that confine a closed bottom of the container, and outer fold lines that extend outwardly from four corners of the bottom. The apparatus includes a blank forming device which defines a forming passage of polygonal cross-section and having four corners. A blank feeding device is adapted to feed the blank towards the blank forming device in a first direction substantially parallel to the cross-section of the forming passage. A punching mechanism has a punch head of polygonal cross-section and capable of passing through the forming passage in a second direction transverse to the first direction. The punch head has a forward end formed with a polygonal push pad for pushing the blank through the forming passage. The blank forming device has a pair of first folding parts and a pair of second folding parts which confine the forming passage and which are adapted to fold the blank about the innermost fold lines when the punch head pushes the blank through the forming passage in the second direction. The first and second folding parts are spaced apart from each other adjacent to the corners of the forming passage.

A gusset forming machine includes a mandrel having a support surface on which a blank for the gusset is manually mounted, and one or more pusher assemblies which are driven into contact with the mandrel to deform the blank, thus forming a gusset. Preferably, each pusher assembly includes a holding blade which prevents movement of the blank relatively to the mandrel during the gusset forming operation, and a plurality of pushing blades which deform the blank into valleys formed between adjacent ridges formed on the support surface of the mandrel, thus forming the gusset. The mandrel is preferably movable into and out of alignment with the pusher assembly or assemblies. Multiple pusher assemblies are preferably provided which extend at angles from one another and produce a multi-sided gusset in a single operation.

The sheets include a closure bonding material for securing the sheets around items to be wrapped. The labels are detachably connected to the sheets with an adhesive, a perforation or a tear line. Spots of closure bonding material may be placed on the labels to hold the labels in a wrapped position. The information areas typically include data which may be selected to describe the source, type and characteristics of the items to be wrapped in the sheets. The sheets may also include detachable sleeves for protecting wrapped items during shipping and handle areas which may be punched out of the sheets for grasping the wrapped items. The handle areas may also contain information similar to that on the detachable labels. Sheets having labels with choice blocks may also be used for forming flower pots or flower pot covers. By providing such labels on the unformed sheets, it is not necessary to add tags or labels after the sheets are formed into flower pots or flower pot covers.
18 Apparatus and method using air pressure and vacuum to form flat-paneled flower pot cover US805412 1991-12-10 US5176609A 1993-01-05 Donald E. Weder; Joseph G. Straeter
A male die, a female die, air pressure and vacuum are used to form a sheet of material into a flat-paneled flower pot or flower pot cover. A platform supports the female die which has an opening with flat surfaces for forming panels in the base and skirt of the flower pot or flower pot cover. The male die has forming surfaces which mate with the forming surfaces of the female die. The sheet of material is centered over the opening of the female die. A bracket having a plurality of legs which align with the panel-forming surfaces of the female die is placed on the sheet of material. Air pressure and vacuum lines communicating with the opening of the female die are used to control the sheet of material as the male die enters the opening of the female die. The top surface of the platform and the bracket legs provide additional control of the sheet of material. The sheet of material is pressed between forming surfaces of the male and female die to form the flat-paneled flower pot or flower pot cover.
