A stud for ultrasonic insertion into a strip of material generally comprises a shank having a head portion and an entering portion on opposite ends thereof. The head portion is ultrasonically insertable into the strip, and the entering portion is insertable into an aperture in a workpiece. The head portion comprises a positive stop means for locating a level of insertion of the head portion into the strip. Means for providing pull out resistance is disposed on the head portion above the positive stop means, and means for providing torsional resistance is disposed on the head portion between the positive stop means and the means for providing pull out resistance. A body portion is located on the head portion above the means for providing pull out resistance. A unique method is also provided for ultrasonically inserting the stud into the strip.

Alternative adhesive attachments formed from multiple components are also disclosed.

An improved attachment fixture is provided for securely mounting an adhesive attachment such as a thread screw, patch, or the like onto a substrate. The improved fixture, which is adapted for construction as a one-piece plastic molding, is temporarily secured to the substrate in a first position with the attachment substantially out of bearing engagement with the substrate and then switched to a second position applying a positive force urging the attachment into bearing engagement with the substrate. The fixture is allowed to remain in the second position for a period of time sufficient for curing of an adhesive material applied to the attachment/substrate interface, after which the fixture may be removed. In some forms, the improved fixture maintains the orientation of the attachment during movement into bearing engagement with the substrate thereby preventing uneven distribution of or uneven application of forces to the adhesive material. Additionally, the improved fixture can be designed for installation by use of automated or power tool equipment.

For the production of screw fasteners with plastic patches thereon, the fasteners are preheated to a high temperature. Each heated fastener pauses at a processing station where a predetermined increment of a plastic strip is severed and dropped onto the hot fastener and as the plastic melts a pressure shoe forms the plastic to the curved cross-sectional configuration of the fastener. The fasteners are then quenched. For high production a number of the fasteners are processed simultaneously on each of the repeated cycles of operation. The apparatus is readily adjustable to handle fasteners of different sizes.
