121 PROCESS AND DEVICE FOR REMOVING THE TAIL END OF BRUSSELS SPROUTS EP10707822.2 2010-02-26 EP2538808B1 2014-07-23 KEENAN, Christopher, Stephen; BAC, Dirk, Jacobus; GROENEWEG, Bastiaan, Rinke, Anthony; McLACHLAN, Ian
In an aspect, a process for removing a tail end of Brussels sprouts comprises separating a Brussels sprout from a stack and transferring it to a longitudinal transport track. On the track, the Brussels sprout is manipulated to position a longest dimension of the Brussels sprout perpendicular to a direction of travel of the transport track. Near an end of the track, a position and an orientation of each Brussels sprout is defined by photographic detection. Each Brussels sprout is removed from the transport track by a gripper. A position and an orientation of the gripper are defined using the detected position and orientation of the Brussels sprout to be removed. The gripper is re-oriented and moved along a knife to remove the tail end of the Brussels sprout. The Brussels sprout is removed from the gripper and collected.

Garlic cloves to have their outer inedible skins removed are placed on a shake table 14 which spreads them generally into a one-clove layer and moves them toward an exit edge 16. The cloves drop from shake table onto a sloped feed tray 18 having a number of downwardly extending parallel troughs 20. Underneath each trough is a tube 48 having a flexible cylinder 50 secured to its lower end which receives cloves from its associated trough 20. A continuous belt 52 driven along a path to present an upper surface has a number of openings 58 within each of which an open-topped product cup 24 is secured. The flexible cylinder 50 contacts the belt surface and is closed off between product cups 24 and released to feed cloves into the cups upon alignment therewith. A plate 30 is spaced just above the belt 52 and has openings through which nozzles 28 extend to provide a timed blast of pressurised air into the cups 24 for peeling the cloves. The outer skins are removed from the space above the belt 52 by a suction fan.
