An end mill has a plurality of quick change insert holders for cutter inserts on machine tools. Each of the plurality of quick change tool holders comprises a housing having at least one seat portion which is adapted to receive a cutter insert. A clamping arm is movably mounted in the insert housing and has a clamp portion adapted to engage a cutter insert extending over the seat portion. A locking mechanism is contained within the housing. The locking mechanism has a clamp position which forces the clamp portion of the clamping arm to engage a cutter insert and a release position which forces the clamp portion to disengage from a cutter insert. The locking mechanism moves between the release position and the clamp position.

A cemented carbide ball end mill comprises a cutting portion with a semi-spherical ball portion at a tip thereof, and has a following configuration. When an intersection line between a cutting edge rake face and a chip evacuating flute at the ball portion is projected on a plane which includes a central axis of the ball end mill and is parallel with a cutting edge at the central portion of a ball portion tip, projected on the plane is a convex-curved line or a straight line. An angle formed by the straight line connecting a vertex of the ball portion, where the intersection line passes through, and the other end of the intersection line with respect to the central axis is from 30null to 50null. Further, an angle formed by the rake face and the chip evacuating flute is from 100null to 150null, and a width of the chip evacuating flute is 0.5 to 5 times as large as a radius of the ball portion. On the cutting portion, a coating film of titanium carbide or the like is formed as a first layer, and another coating film of a silicon carbide system amorphous film or the like having a physical property similar to that of diamond is added as a second layer. The cemented carbide ball end mill suffers less deposition of melted metal even when dry-cutting an aluminum alloy, has a long service life, and enables the machining providing an excellent surface property.

An end mill has a plurality of quick change insert holders for cutter inserts on machine tools. Each of the plurality of quick change tool holders comprises a housing having at least one seat portion which is adapted to receive a cutter insert. A clamping arm is movably mounted in the insert housing and has a clamp portion adapted to engage a cutter insert extending over the seat portion. A locking mechanism is contained within the housing. The locking mechanism has a clamp position which forces the clamp portion of the clamping arm to engage a cutter insert and a release position which forces the clamp portion to disengage from a cutter insert. The locking mechanism moves between the release position and the clamp position.

A cemented carbide ball end mill comprises a cutting portion with a semi-spherical ball portion at a tip thereof. The cutting edge portion has a cutting edge rake face and a chip evacuating flute at the ball portion. <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cemented carbide ball end mill, which can dry cut aluminium alloy with a few deposition, and can maintain a long tool life, and can produce a surface having excellent property. <P>SOLUTION: When an intersecting line 10 of a rake face 8 at a ball portion 1 and a chip discharging flute 7 is projected on a plane which includes a central axis 14 and is parallel with a cutting edge 5 at a central part of a tip end 11 of the ball portion 1, the intersecting line 10 projected on the plane is determined so as to be a convex round curve or a straight line. A straight line 15 connecting the apex 11 of the ball portion 1 on the intersecting line and the other end 12 is determined so as to make an angle θ in the range from 30° to 50° with the central axis 14. An angle α made by the rake face and the chip discharging flute is determined so as to be in the range from 100° to 150°. The normal width β of the chip discharging flute is determined so as to be in the range from 0.5 to 5 times as large as the radius of the ball at the ball portion. In addition, a coating film, such as titanium carbide (TiC), is formed on the first layer of the cutting edge, and a coating film, such as amorphous film of silicon carbide system (SiC/C) having a physical property similar to that of diamond, is added on the second layer of the cutting edge. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cemented carbide end mill that undergoes less deposition and can maintain a long life and machining with appreciable surface properties even via dry cutting on an aluminum alloy. SOLUTION: The cemented carbide end mill has, at its edge portion, a first coating film layer of titanium carbide (TiC) or titanium aluminum nitride(TiAlN), and additionally over the first layer, a second coating film layer of a titanium carbide system (TiC/C) with similar physical properties to those of diamond or a silicon carbide system amorphous film (SiC/C) with similar physical properties to those of diamond.
