61 Barrier-type metal wire fabric and its manufacture US227666 1981-01-23 US4396041A 1983-08-02 Ronald G. Daringer
A barrier-type metal wire fabric which is substantially free of transverse passages while providing desired travel path flexibility is disclosed along with methods and means for its manufacture. Shaped wire with at least two diametrically opposed planar surfaces is helically wound with a planar surface confronting the working surface of the winding mandrel. Left-hand wound and right-hand wound spirals are assembled with individual loop portions of each being nested within the loops of its next adjacent oppositely-wound spiral. A connector rod inserted within longitudinally overlapping internal loop portions of such spirals provides for pivotal relative movement between adjacent spirals and desired travel path flexibility while the dimensional relationships and assembly taught substantially eliminate non-rotational relative movement between metal wire elements of the fabric.

Chain-link fencing consisting of a mesh of interlinked wire coils is flattened so as to have an overall thickness perpendicular to the plane of the mesh equal to between two and five times the diameter of the wire constituting the coils. Thereupon the flattened mesh is either rolled up into tight rolls, or is laid meander-fashion in a container. The mesh may be flattened by means of a platen press operating synchronously and immediately downstream of a fence-weaving machine that produces the mesh step-wise, or by a pair of rollers.

A wire winding blade extends through spiral outfeed guide members and receives spring-like unannealed wire from a source drawn by rotation of the winding blade; the wire from the source first passes through tensioning means then over an infeed guide pulley which guides it into a linear guide member having a bore slightly in excess of the wire diameter from which the wire passes over a small diameter idler roller sheave which imparts a back bend to the wire which is then fed into the slot of the spiral wire guide means where it is bent in a reverse manner about the winding blade.

Chain link fence weaving apparatus includes manually shuttled shaft mounted for reciprocation along its longitudinal axis and also rotatable thereabout, a handle extending laterally from the shaft for use in moving the latter. Wire bent into zigzag shape is advanced into a guide tube parallel with the shaft, this tube being formed of two concave sections hinged together along longitudinal edges thereof. One section of the tube is swung toward and away from the other section by rotating the handle about the shaft. Movement of the shaft along its axis causes it to rotate between two angular positions, in one of which a first set of hooks on the shaft engage chain link fabric held between the longitudinal edges of the tube sections and in the other of which a second set of hooks on the shaft engage the fabric. Thus, the fabric is permitted to move upwardly from the tube when the movable section of the latter is swung away from the fixed section, but one set of hooks always limits the distance the fabric moves. Shaft is shuttled after each strand of fabric wire is woven so that the next strand will engage the fabric. A switch on the handle initiates feed of fabric wire into the tube, and a switch inside tube stops feed when the wire reaches a predetermined point.

A wire net manufacturing apparatus is provided to improving productivity by supplying a predetermined long lateral wire at high speed with high pressure air. A wire net manufacturing apparatus comprises a wire net manufacturing unit and a lateral wire supply unit(200) and manufactures a wire net having hexagonal net meshes and a lateral wire crossing the hexagonal meshes. The lateral wire supply unit is composed of a frame(210) supplying the space where predetermined straight wires are laid, and forming a feeding space progressively feeding lateral wires; a feeding unit(220) mounted on the frame to feed lateral wires on the frame into the feeding space; a nozzle(230) neighboring one side end of the feeding space on the frame and supplying pressure pushing lateral wires fed with the feeding space; a guide pipe(240) mounted on the frame to neighbor the other side end of the feeding space, and installed to guide the lateral wire between wires twisted by the net manufacturing unit; and a compressor(250) supplying high pressure air with the nozzle.
