9 Assorting system JP8585199 1999-03-29 JPH11309416A 1999-11-09 JONES KEITH MALCOLM; HOPKINS GREGORY CHARLES
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an assorting system in which group objects having no allocated carry-out containers are temporarily stored in a system until a quantity to make assorting processing more efficient is attained by determining whether the carry-out containers are allocated thereto or are recycled when these group objects approach an ejection apparatus. SOLUTION: The essence of the system lies in that postal item groups more than the existing carry-out containers 12 may be handled. Not all the postal item groups have the allocated carry-out containers 12. This allocation may be achieved by the control system 16 which makes decision in such a manner that the groups are housed into the respective storage containers 4 of a circular conveyor 6 until the quantity sufficient for efficiently gathering and assorting the objects having the common forwarding destinations is attained. When judgment is made that the objects having the same forwarding destinations accumulate sufficiently at the circular conveyor 6, the system executes control in such a manner that the objects are discharged into the carry-out containers 12 when the respective storage containers 4 pass above the related carry-out containers 12.
10 APPARATUS FOR SORTING MAIL INCLUDING MAIL RECEIVING RECEPTABLES ARRANGED IN AN ARCUATE CONFIGURATION EP02767002.5 2002-10-08 EP1453615A1 2004-09-08 BERLIN, Murray; BYRNE, Michael
An apparatus for sorting mail includes at least one tier of mail receiving receptacles (12) arranged in an arcuate configuration. The preferred embodiment utilizes an arm (16) supported by a support (14) for pivotal movement about a substantially vertical pivot axis (22). The arm sweeps in an arc in close proximity with and conforming to the arcuate configuration of the tier of mail receiving receptacles (12). A conveyor (24) conveys individual pieces of mail (26) sequentially along the arm. A controller (36) is provided which is adapted to monitor the positioning of the arm (16) relative to the tier of mail receiving receptacles (12), selectively activate a drive motor (30) to alter the positioning of the arm (16), and selectively activate the conveyor (24) to convey individual pieces of mail (26) sequentially along the conveyor to the second end of the arm and into selected mail receiving receptacles. The apparatus provides a significant sorting capacity within a relatively compact space.
11 Sorting system EP99302265.6 1999-03-25 EP0949015A3 2002-08-14 Jones, Keith Malcolm; Hopkins, Gregory Charles

A sorting system is disclosed, for example for mail items. In the disclosed system, a circulating storage system (2) can receive items from an inlet, and deposit them in an appropriate output receptacle (12) which has been allocated to items in a particular group. For example, the items can be sorted by destination, and each output receptacle (12) can be allocated to a particular destination. In the event that the destination of an item has no output receptacle allocated thereto, the system controller (16) can determine whether to allocate a receptacle, or whether to recirculate the item within the circulating storage system. This possibility allows items to be grouped together within the system, until there are sufficient items for a particular destination to allow them to be handled efficiently, and in particular allows the allocation of output receptacles to destinations to be controlled efficiently.

12 AUTOMATIC ROTARY SORTER EP92924368.1 1992-11-05 EP0612272B1 1997-02-05 BONNET, Henri
An automatic rotary sorter system for sorting objects from a source stream into a plurality of destination streams which are spaced apart both horizontally and vertically. The automatic rotary sorter system of the present invention includes an object source conveyor, a rotating distribution assembly, and an object receiving assembly. The rotating distribution assembly of the automatic rotary sorter system is provided with an upright drive shaft and several receiving and discharging wings. The object receiving assembly of the automatic rotary sorter system is provided with a plurality of transverse conveyors. The object source conveyor provides the stream of sortable objects for sorting by the automatic rotary sorter system. Sorting within the automatic rotary sorter system is achieved through the transfer of one sortable object at a time from the object source conveyor to a selected transverse conveyor by the receiving and discharging wings of the rotating distribution assembly. Sortable objects are then advanced along the selected transverse conveyor for removal from the automatic rotary sorter system.

The invention concerns a method for preparing in one single pass a postman's route containing letters (L) as well as so-called large format postal objects (P), which consists in: sequentially displacing the letters and large format objects by means of a conveyor (3) above the carrier-pockets of a stationary carrier-pocket carrousel (4), the successive carrier-pockets of the carrousel corresponding to different successive points of the postman's route, orienting each letter or large format object from the conveyor to one of the carrousel carrier-pockets which corresponds to the point for distributing the letter or large format object; when the whole set of letters and large format objects of the postman's beat are assembled by distribution point in the carrousel carrier-pockets, moving the bucket carrousel to bring successively each carrier-pocket to a location (5) where the carrier-pocket is emptied into a receptacle.
