PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recycle polymer fiber by cutting a used carpet into small long and thin pieces, and decomposing and separating the small pieces. SOLUTION: The used carpet to be recycled is supplied to a shredder 102 and cut into small thin and long pieces. The cut pieces are discharged onto a hammer mill supply conveyor 104 and passed below a trap 105 which removes iron-based metal. Further, the conveyor 104 feeds the pieces to a rotary hammer mill 106 and the small pieces of the carpet are decomposed. A mixture of different constituents of the tassel and backing materials of the carpet which is discharged from the hammer mill 106 is conveyed to a vibrating screen 110, which removes dust, particles, and calcium carbonate powder. Oversize discharged materials are supplied to a drum separatpr 112 to remove irony materials, and supplied to a granulating machine 116. The granulated particle mixture is conveyed with air to a primary separation unit through an air blower unit 118. COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
8 Process and Device for Separation and Recovery of Waste Carpet Components US15667789 2017-08-03 US20180339429A1 2018-11-29 Denis Jahic; Carlo Risatti; Damijan Marolt; Vid Margon
A process for separation and recovery of waste carpet components, wherein waste carpets are predominantly composed of a face fiber material, a backing material and an adhesive coating which includes latex and filler. Virtually all of the filler, i.e. calcium carbonate, is removed prior to fine grinding and passing the mixture to a high speed centrifuge for separation of the face fiber material from the backing material. A high friction washer is disclosed which separates the face giver material, the backing material and the adhesive coating. The fine grinding of the material to be recycled may be done only once before passing the mixture to the centrifuge by which the loss of the fiber material is highly reduced before its separation into face fiber and backing material and also the life time of the fine grinder and the centrifuge can be prolonged.
9 WASTED CARPET AND FELT SCRAP RECYCLING APPARATUS AND METHOD THEREOF US14966222 2015-12-11 US20160368171A1 2016-12-22 Hong Mo Koo; Byeong Kwon Hong; Bong Hyun Park; Jae Woong Ha; Soon Yong Park
A wasted carpet and felt scrap recycling apparatus is provided. The waste carpet and felt scrap recycling apparatus includes a feeding unit that feeds a cut scrap while forming a feeding path and a supply unit that is connected to the feeding path and supplies the scrap that passed the feeding unit along the feeding path while pressing the scrap. A separation unit is spaced apart from the supply unit, and provides a frictional force to one surface of the scrap supplied from the supply unit through rotation of the supply unit and separates the scrap into fiber and recycled material.
10 Apparatus and process for separating carpet fibers US13731240 2012-12-31 US08794552B2 2014-08-05 Frank J. Levy; Sergio Dell'Orco
Apparatus for separating components of post-consumer carpet—pile, adhesive, and primary/secondary backings—may initially comprise spectrographic face fiber identification. Separating substantial portions of pile from backing comprises feeding carpeting into a rotating pinned drum, with separated pile U's dropping, while a residual composition, being primarily backing, travels with the drum, to be separated therefrom using vacuum pressure, with the composite backing being sent to a press. Vacuum pressure delivers the separated U's to a spinning perforated squirrel cage to remove dislodged pieces of adhesive, by vacuum pressure applied to an interior top portion of the cage to draw pieces therein. Rotating the perforated squirrel cage, which is sealed on the exterior using a belt, permits the U's to drop into a hopper. A mesh shaker box vibrates to separate any remaining backing from the pile U's. Hammers in a fibermill remove remaining adhesive attached to the separated pile U fiber.
11 System and method for separating carpet fibers US12930696 2011-01-13 US20120181361A1 2012-07-19 Frank Levy; Sergio Dell'Orco
A system and method for separating carpet U's from carpet backing is described. The separation system includes a means for transporting a blend of carpet U's and backing material containing at least backing fibers and an adhesive material to a shaker box. The shaker box has at least one opening for receiving the blend. One or more portions of the shaker box have one or more orifices. The shaker box causes the carpet U's to pass through the orifices when the shaker box is activated leaving at least the backing fibers in the shaker box. The U's are passed to a cleaning means where said U's are treated to remove portions of adhesive material present on said U's. The backing fibers are released from said shaker box and transported for further treatment.

The invention relates to a process for recovering monomeric units of a nylon from carpet material, said carpet material comprising fibres containing said nylon bound to a backing containing one or more non-nylon components, the carpet material containing between 15 and 35 wt. % of said nylon, which process comprises the steps of: a) mechanically separating the carpet material into an enriched carpet mixture containing between 35 and 55 wt. % of said nylon and into a depleted carpet mixture having a lower content of said nylon than the carpet material b) exposing the enriched carpet mixture to conditions at which depolymerisation of said nylon is effected.

A process for separating and recovering waste carpet material components, especially face fiber material, includes removing adhesive material from the waste carpet material feedstock to obtain a mixture containing face fiber material which is passed with a liquid medium to a hydrocyclone, where the solids in the mixture are separated on the basis of specific gravity, and recovered. The recovered components can then be processed into desired products.

The invention relates to small pieces of carpet which are introduced into a first impeller type mixer together with an aqueous solution containing a separating salt in order to obtain a first suspension which is guided to a first mechanical separating step. A high-solid phase is extracted therefrom, as is a second high-solid phase which contains a polymer fibre material, and a liquid phase. The second high-solid phase is mixed with a separating solution containing water in an impeller type mixer and a second suspension is produced which is guided to a second mechanical separating step. A third high-solid phase is extracted therefrom, along with a phase rich in polymer fibre material and a liquid phase. An acid is introduced into the impeller-type mixer along with the separating solution containing water, said acid being stronger than H2 CO3, and the pH value of the liquid phase in the impeller type mixer is adjusted to 2-6.
