System is provided for aiding a horseback rider in maintaining balance while riding, includes sensor pad positioned between rider and saddle, pad/blanket worn by the horse during riding. Sensor pad includes sensors for measuring force exerted by the rider on the horse at individual measuring points. Controller configured for receiving force data from the sensor pad, includes a microprocessor continuously polling each sensor in the sensor pad for force data, calibrating each measurement based on an initial value, aggregating measurements from sensors on a left side and a right side of the sensor pad over a predetermined time interval, and calculating the differences between measurements on the right side and left side of the sensor pad. Power supply, electronic circuitry and alert mechanism receive signal from controller and notify rider when rider is off-balance based on calculated differences between measurements on right side and left side of sensor pad.

A device and a method for monitoring a plane in space over an interval of time to create an image representing the time history of the plane in space. A line image sensor (2) captures a series of line images of the plane in space which are converted to digital information by an A/D converter (4) for storage in solid state memory (3). The line image sensor (2) and the storage memory (3) are coupled for synchronous operation so as to maximise the operation rate of the line monitoring system and provide a single means for adjusting the operating rate of the line monitoring system. The series of line images are corrected for perspective distortion. To produce a time history image of the plane in space, the line images can be retrieved from the solid state memory (3) by a computer (7). The computer (7) displays the series of line images adjacent to each other to create the time history image. The present invention has a number of applications, including photo finish cameras.

An inflatable, buoyant and portable platform (100), particularly for emergency use, such as during a plane crash or a sinking ship is disclosed. The platform (100) comprises a hollow inflatable enclosure (105) having a top surface (165) and a bottom surface (170), both the surfaces (165,170) being peripherally joined by a flexible curtain (175). A support means (180) is provided inside the enclosure (105), that adapts an extended form when the enclosure (105) is inflated, for enhancing rigidity of the enclosure (105) when inflated and loaded. The support means (180) adapts a retracted form when the enclosure (105) is deflated. The enclosure (105) is inflatable through an inflating valve (135) by an external source of compressed gas and deflatable through a deflating valve (145) and an exit valve (185), the valves (135,145,185) being provided on the enclosure (105). The platform (100) is also connectable to one another, forming a platform of different shapes and sizes.
