The time-shifting buffer enables the communication device to either (i) render the media received over the network in a near real-time mode or (ii) render both the media received over the network and the locally created media in a time-shifted mode by retrieving the stored media from the time-shifting buffer. A conversation management system enables the communication device to transition rendering of the media of the conversation between the time-shifted mode and the near real-time mode without interrupting the ongoing storage of the media of the conversation received at the communication device over the network into the time-shifting buffer. By associating the locally created media and the media received over the network, the conversation is constituted.

The present invention is directed to various methods for rendering one or more conversations on a communication device. In a one method, a current conversation among a plurality of conversations is selected. For the selected conversation, media received and associated with the selected conversation is rendered, while media created on the device and associated with the selected conversation is transmitted to the participants of the selected conversation. The media associated with the non-selected conversations is stored on the communication device for later review. In a second method, the plurality of conversations may be consecutively rendered using a priority order. As media for the various conversations is received, the available media of the highest priority conversation is rendered while the media of the other conversations is rendered in a time-shifted mode. In yet another method, the media of the plurality of conversations may be simultaneously rendered and stored. With this embodiment, one of the conversations may be selected for review. During the review period, the received media of the other conversations is stored, but not rendered.
