A switchgear module (20) is provided that is assembled from one or more molded housing portions (50,60,70) to provide a gas-tight volume for the housing of electrical components (21,23). The switchgear modules (20) include provisions for assembly of various combinations of switchgear modules (25,26,27,28) into a variety of electrical circuit configurations while maintaining a gas seal of the switchgear modules (20). In a preferred arrangement, the switchgear module (20) includes bus conductors (22) that are integrally incorporated during the molding of the switchgear module housing and that are accessible from opposite sides of the module. Further, the switchgear module (20) includes integrally molded features (24) for providing access to make electrical interconnections between the bus conductors (22) of adjacently positioned switchgear modules (20). Thus, the finally assembled and tested switchgear modules (20) with pressurized internal volume may be configured to provide a variety of different electrical circuit combinations of the internal components and are also capable of being reconfigured as desired into different configurations or lineups without the loss of the seal of the interior volume of the switchgear modules. The switchgear module (20) includes a complete internal and integral system to satisfy desirable operating practices to deenergize, test and ground the circuit before working thereon. Specifically, the switchgear module (20) includes an integral indicator (228,216) with test feature, a visible open gap in the circuit which is readily observable externally to the module, and a ground position (33) for the internal switch to ground the circuit. In a preferred arrangement, an operating mechanism (40) is internal to the module (20) and controls the position of either a loadbreak switch (21) or a disconnect switch between three operable positions, close, open, and ground. A universal termination system is provided for power tools. The universal termination system includes criteria for each of the main switch platforms that define the number, type, location and orientation of the terminations. That is, the number, type, location and orientation of the terminations in each main switch platform are standardized and the power tools that use that type main switch platform use the main switch platform having the standardized terminations. That is, power tools that use push button switches use the push button switch with the standardized terminations, power tools that use overhang switches use the overhang switch with the standardized terminations, and power tools that use in-line VSR switches use the in-line VSR switch with the standardized terminations. In an aspect of the invention, a right-angle pin terminal is received in one or more sets of the standardized terminations. In an aspect of the invention, the switch body has features that cooperate with the right-angle pin terminals to reduce the risk of shorting adjacent terminals. In an aspect of the invention, a switch has standardized connections on a bottom of a switch body that mate with terminals of a plug-in control module. In an aspect of the invention, a switch for a hand-held power tool has cord set terminations that are screw-tab terminals.

A thermally-responsive current-sensitive switch comprises a moulded-plastics body (1) capturing therein first and second terminals (2, 3) in the form of metal stampings and having an internal chamber wherein a leaf spring (6) and a snap-acting bimetallic blade (7) of the same shape are together spot-welded to one of the terminals with the leaf spring (6) underlying the bimetal (7) in registry therewith and at its other end carrying a silver contact (12) which co-operates in switching operations with the other switch terminal (3). In one embodiment the spring bias of the leaf spring (6) is directed in a sense such as to tend to open the switch and the force generated by the bimetal (7) in its contacts-closing movement is sufficient to overcome the spring bias of the leaf spring (6), whereas in another embodiment the leaf spring (6) develops either a neutral force or a contacts-opening force. The leaf spring (6) electrically shunts the bimetal (7) whereby the current-carrying capability of the switch is increased and different switch specifications can use the same bimetal with different leaf springs.
