1 Barring adaptor for an engine air compressor US720813 1996-10-01 US5882181A 1999-03-16 David P. Genter; J. Eric Parlow; Roger L. Sweet; Nathan R. Ritchie
In an internal combustion engine, a barring adapter member is mounted on an auxiliary engine component, such as an air compressor shaft which is geared to the engine crankshaft. The barring adapter member is configured to receive a barring tool, permitting manual rotation of the air compressor shaft for desirably positioning engine crankshaft-driven components during engine repair or adjustment. In an arrangement according to the invention, the air compressor gear is enclosed by a gear casing, but the adapter is accessible through an aperture closeable by a removable cap. The barring adapter member facilitates barring the engine from a convenient position and is particularly advantageous in an engine designed to eliminate most externally-exposed rotational shaft seals and associated external pulleys conventionally used as barring locations.

Engine barring devices are connected to engines. Known barring devices have been used to rotate crankshafts of engines and adding features to these known devices increases the complexity and cost of such devices. The subject barring device includes a shaft adapted for both axial and rotational movement. A gear is attached to one end of the shaft and is moved axially in a first direction to a first position where a holding device holds the shaft in the first position. In the first position the gear is engaged driving with a flywheel connected to the crankshaft of the engine. A tool engaging portion located on the shaft is adapted to engage with a turning tool. With the shaft in the first position, the turning tool can be used to rotate the crankshaft of the engine. A locking device is included to hold the crankshaft in one of the plurality of rotational positions. The subject barring device provides a holding device to hold the shaft in the first position, a device to disable the activation of a starting system, a tool engaging portion allowing rotation of the shaft and a locking device to lock the shaft in one of a plurality of rotational positions.

PURPOSE:To enable crank rotating force to be improved by setting the upper dead center of a piston at an advanced crank angle. CONSTITUTION:A tappet housing big end bearing section 10 is provided for the crank pin section of a crank arm 11 so that a connecting rod 2 equipped with a crank pin cam 9 and a tappet roller 5 is incorporated within the bearing section. And a ball bearing 6 is also incorporated between the tappet housing big end bearing section 10 and the connecting rod 2. And then, the tappet roller 5 is brought in contact with the cam surface of the crank pin cam 9 by means of a spring 4 and a damper 3 at all time. Owing to this constitution, since the upper dead center of a piston is set at an advanced crank angle, the maximum combustion pressure is exerted at a crank angle wherein the crank arm 11 comes close perpendicularly to the center line of a cylinder, crank rotating force thereby is improved.
