A gene encoding the benzoate dioxygenase alpha subunit has the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 5. A benzoate dioxygenase comprises the beta subunit of SEQ ID NO: 4 and the alpha subunit of SEQ ID NO: 6. A gene encoding the benzoate dioxygenase has the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO: 9.
