PURPOSE: To provide a raw material pitch which has a relatively low melting point, can be readily converted into graphite and forms only a small amount of polymer in the production stage of precursor pitch, prepared by adding to pitch a specified component obtained by treating a heavy oil which is a byproduct of fluid catalytic cracking of petroleum. CONSTITUTION: A heavy oil having a boiling point of 200°C or higher obtained as byproduct of light oil production by fluid catalytic cracking of kerosine, gas oil, etc., is heat treated at about 350W500°C pref. under hydrogen pressure of about 20kg/cm 2 or higher. The product is then treated with methanol and benzene to prepare a material (B) which is insoluble in methanol and is soluble in benzene. The raw material pitch for carbon fiber is prepared by adding 5W 500pts.wt. (B) to 100pts.wt. (A) pitch (e.g. petroleum pitch). The raw material pitch is heat treated at about 370W420°C in an inert gas atmosphere to produce a precursor pitch, which is melt spun, insolubilized and carbonized into carbon fiber. PURPOSE: To obtain a high-performance petroleum binder pitch better than the conventional coal tar pitch as a binder for electrodes and carbonaceous materials, treating a mixture of by-product heavy oils formed in steam and catalytic cracking. CONSTITUTION: Heavy oil (A) having a boiling point ≥ substantially 200°C, formed as a by-product in steam-cracking of petroleums to prepare olefins and heavy oil (B) having a boiling point ≥ substantially 200°C, formed as a by-product in catalytic cracking of petroleums to prepare gasoline are mixed at a volume ratio of preferably (A) to (B) of 90:10W30:70. The mixture thus obtained is heat-treated at 380W500°C for 15minW20hr to give a high-performance petroleum binder usable for carbon electrodes for aluminum refining and graphite electrodes for electric furnace steel making. |

The invention provides a method for the preparation of a pitch spinnable into pitch filaments as a precursor of carbon fibers starting from a pitch material such as coal tar and coal tar pitch. Different from the conventional procedure involving hydrogenation of the starting pitch, the starting pitch in the inventive method is first heated together with an aromatic oil, preferably, in the presence of a cracking catalyst such as siii- ca-aiumina and zeolite at 350 to 500°C for 10 to 60 minutes under no pressurization with hydrogen and, after removal of insoluble materials, then heated at a temperature of 430 to 600°C. The thus obtained pitch for spinning has good spinnability and the carbon fibers prepared from the pitch have a unique microscopic structure and excellent physical properties exceeding by far the conventional pitch-based carbon fibers and approximating the HP-grade carbon fibers prepared from polyacrylonitrile fibers. |
