[Class 141] [Also in Group IX] A collar formed of separate band and top portions, comprises backing strips b, b<1>, Fig. 5, which are each woven so as to provide a stripe of thinner material in the region of the seam b<3> joining the band to the top portion of the collar. The strips b, b<1> are cut from a band of fabric A, Fig. 1, woven with stripes a of relatively thick warp yarns alternating with stripes a<1> of relatively fine warp yarns. The strips b, b<1> are covered by poplin or other shirt cloth B<1>. The portion of the strip b<1> forming the fold line of the collar is preferably slightly wider at the ends of the collar than at the back thereof.

[Class 141] [Also in Group IX] A one-piece multi-ply double collar or cuff having a woven-in fold line is provided with a woven-in reinforcement adjacent the fold line. In the form shown, the collar is made from a single piece of multiply interwoven fabric woven on a curve, and is provided in the band portion 4 with a woven-in reinforcement 6 adjacent the fold line 3, by increasing the number or the thickness of the packer warp threads 12. Alternatively, or in addition, the fabric in the area 6 may be reinforced by the employment of additional or thicker face, back, or binder warp threads. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the band portion of the collar is provided with an additional woven-in reinforcement spaced from the reinforcement adjacent the fold line.

454,417. Shirt collars. CAMPBELL CO., 40, Worth Street, New York, U.S.A. April 9, 1936, No. 10531. Convention date, Sept. 5, 1935. [Class 141] A collar is formed of outer plies and an interlining carrying a suitable fusible material, e.g. strands of cellulose acetate, the interlining comprising a top portion formed of relatively fine fabric, and a band portion formed of relatively heavy fabric, the portions of the interlining being stitched together in overlapping relationship and defining a fold line within the top portion of the collar, and the outer plies and the interlining being secured together by means of the application of a suitable solvent together with the application of pressure, and, if desired, of heat. In making the collar, the top and band portions 4, 10 respectively of the interlining are stitched together at 16, Fig. 4, in overlapping position, and the interlining is then stitched at 19, Fig. 7, adjacent its lower edge to one of the outer plies 1 of the collar. The structure is then superimposed on the other outer ply 22, and the parts united by means of a seam 23, Fig. 9. The collar is then turned inside out, Fig. 11, and the parts thereof adhered together. The collar is either finished off as a separate collar, or stitched to the material around the neck opening of the shirt.

382,096. Collars and cuffs; woven fabrics. HARTLEY, W. D., Kinnaird House, Pall Mall East, London. Nov. 20, 1931, No. 32255. [Class 141.] Collars and cuffs are made from woven fabric intermediate in character between single-ply fabric and multi-ply fabric, a portion being woven so that the fabric as a whole is foldable about this portion. The fabric comprises one layer or ply in which the warp and weft threads are interwoven in known manner and a series of additional weft threads are spaced apart from the weft threads of the first layer by packer warp threads but united to the first layer by binder warp threads. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the weft threads 1 and warp threads 2 are interwoven as usual and a series of additional weft threads 3 are spaced from the threads 1 by packer warp threads 4 and united with the first layer by binder warp threads 5. A fold line may be formed at 6 by the omission of the packer warp threads 4 or by the use of thinner warp threads over this portion. Other methods of obtaining a fold line may be employed such as by the omission of the packer warps or by the use of thinner warps over the whole of a portion of the fabric to one side of a predetermined line.

211,750. White, A. E., (Heusen, J. M. van). April 23, 1923. Collars, linen; shirt cuffs; materials.-Collars and cuffs, particularly of the semi-stiff type, are provided with permanent natural fold lines, such as the fold' line 3 of a double collar or at the base of the wings of stand'-up collars, by treating the material along the desired line with an acid, for example a weak solution of sulphuric acid. After treatment the fabric is folded and subjected to a temperature of 100‹ C. with pressure and then washed with water and, if desired, an alkaline solution. The treatment may be carried out before or after the blanks are cut out. Specifications 116,090* and 116,092* are referred to.

116,090. Heusen, J. M. van, (Assignee of Morgan, J. L.). May 22, 1917, [Convention date]. Fashioned fabrics, looms specially designed for. -Double collars of multi-ply fabric are made by weaving, under the same tension, the outer and inner folds in such a way that the outer fold is longer than the inner one, whereby the collar takes a permanent curvilinear set when folded. The intermediate edge fold portion is also woven under the same tension, but with less warp threads, so that is weakened. The fabric for making the collars is woven by taking the warp and binder threads from rolls 1, over guide-rolls 2, through spacing-frames 3, around guide-rolls 4, through thread-supporting loops of the heald frame 6, and through a reed 7 carried by a beam 8. The completed fabric is carried over a skew guide-rod 10, and between tapered tension rolls 11, 12, to the take-up roll 13. The rolls 11, 12 produce the required uniform tension on the threads, whereby the greatest length of thread is on one edge, the length gradually diminishing towards the other edge. Fig. 5 shows a cross-section of the fabric, wherein the weft threads 17 of the three-ply fabric are connected by binder threads 21, 22, and the warp threads 20 of the intermediate layer are omitted at the centre so as to form the weakened edge fold portion 23. The weakened edge may also be produced by omitting warp threads from one of the outer layers, or from one of the outer layers and also from the intermediate layer. The collar is stamped out of the fabric, bound, and finished in the usual way. Specifications 110,942, [Class 142 (iv), Woven fabrics &c.], and 116,092 are referred to.
