CONSTITUTION: A water gate 1 comprises a water gate chamber 4 consisting of a front door chamber 2 and a rear door chamber 3, and the passage of ships is enables by operating first and second gates 6 and 7 upwardly and downwardly movably provided in the chambers 2 and 3 respectively. The gates 6 and 7 are set in the open condition by slightly elevating the gates 6 and 7 until the water levels inside and outside the chamber 4 become nearly equal to each other and then rapidly pulling up the gates 6 and 7. The gates 6 and 7 are set in the closed condition by rapidly lowering the gates 6 and 7 to a position close to the bottom and then slowly lowering the gates 6 and 7 to the closed condition.
