Fig. 1 shows a reference-address generator in a paging receiver, the address being effectively specified by a coding matrix 1, the aim being to minimize the number of connections into an envelope 10. A clock train at 11 switches a bi-stable 7 to energize matrix columns 3, 4 alternately, columns 2, 5 being permanently deenergized and energised, respectively, so each column carries a respective one of the possible 2-bit signals and each matrix row delivers a 2-bit signal depending on the matrix connections, repeatedly. A counter 14 driven from bi-stable 7 controls a logic tree 12 to route these 8 row signals in turn via a terminal 11 1 to a comparator (not shown). A modification (Fig. 3, not shown) constitutes the generated address from nine 3-bit signals instead of eight 2-bit signals. Another modification (Fig. 5, not shown) has the unit corresponding to bi-stable 7 outside the envelope, and one of its two outputs is used inside the envelope to gate successive parallel outputs of the coding matrix into two sets of bi-stables alternately, to feed the comparator in parallel.
