CONSTITUTION: A CCD solid-state image pickup element 12 converts an optical image of the object formed by an objective lens 11 into an electric picture. Then each picture element outputted from a shift register 18 is fed as a video signal to an amplifier circuit 15, where the signal is amplified and the result of ampliflcation is fed to a slicer 16. The slicer 16 is provided with a comparator or the like, binarizes a video signal supplied from the amplifier circuit 15 in response to a value of a slice level signal supplied externally and outputs the binarized video signal externally. Thus, the binarized picture of the object is obtained even without applying the binarizing processing by a picture processing section connected to the said binarizing video camera. Moreover, an optimum binarizing level is decided in real time while picking up the object.
