In respect to fixed slit 6, plural slender right-angled triangular light transmission holes 11 are provided on a metallic plate. The light from light emitting element 5 is received by photodetector 7, and the rotation speed of the shaft is detected through waveform shaping circuit 8 from the period of the square wave. Meanwhile, when the output of photodetector 7 is input to one shot multivibrator 16 through differentiating circuit 12, slicer 13, differentiating circuit 14 and slicer 15, the rotation direction can be detected because the output becomes a high level and a low level for clockwise rotation and counterclockwise rotation respectively. Since only one-group slits are used as the fixed slit, the influence of temperature can be prevented.
