1. An indicator tube having a plurality of indicator units with cathodes associated therewith comprising: an evacuated envelope with at least one side transparent; a plurality of first strip-shaped electrodes lying in a first plane and mounted in a parallel relationship in said envelope; a phosphor coating formed on said first strip-shaped electrodes so as to be visible through said transparent side of said envelope; a second plurality of groups of electrodes lying in a second plane parallel to said first plane and mounted in a parallel relationship and crossing said first electrodes with each group defining separate on of said indicator units; a plurality of indicator unit leads respectively connected to all said second electrodes for each group; a third plurality of groups of electrodes lying in said second plane and mounted in a parallel and alternating relationship between said respective second plurality of groups of electrodes; a plurality of indicia selecting leads with each one connected to corresponding ones of said third electrodes in each indicator unit such that when selected ones of said indicia selecting leads are energized simultaneously with one of said indicator unit leads the corresponding indicator unit is energized, and a plurality of cathodes with one mounted respectively adjacent each of indicator units with the second and third plurality of groups of electrodes mounted between said cathodes and said plurality of first electrodes.
2. An indicator tube according to claim 1 wherein said second and third plurality of groups of electrodes cross said first plurality of electrodes at right angles.
3. An indicator tube according to claim 1 wherein said second and third plurality of groups of electrodes cross said first plurality of electrodes at an oblique angle.
4. An indicator tube according to claim 1 comprising means applying an indicator selective voltage to said indicator selector leads and means simultaneously applying voltages to selected ones of said first electrodes and to said indicia selecting leads to produce a desired indication from one of said indicator units.
5. An indicator tube according to claim 4 wherein said means applying an indicator selective voltage sequentially applies voltage to different indicator selector leads in sequence with said means simultaneously applying voltages to said first electrodes and to said indicia selecting leads so as to produce distinct indications on each of said indicator units.
6. An indicator tube according to claim 4 wherein said indicator units are mounted side by side with said indicator unit leads mounted parallel to each other and extending generally parallel to said first electrodes and said indicia selecting leads extend generally parallel to said first electrodes.
7. An electron tube according to claim 1 wherein a plurality of first electrodes are formed from a sheet of conducting material with parallel strips of phosphor material formed thereon, strips of insulation material formed on said sheet between said phosphor material, and said second electrodes formed on said insulation strips.
8. An electron tube comprising: a cathode, a plurlaity of first electrode arranged generally in a first plane in a predetermined pattern and being coated with a luminescent material, a plurality of second electrodes, each being spaced transversely of a portion of a corresponding one of said first electrodes relative to an electron beam between said cathode and said corresponding one of said first electrodes and lying in a second plane means for applying a voltage to said second electrodes to control the cathode current to selective ones of said first electrodes, an evacuated envelope enclosing said cathode and first and second electrodes, said first electrodes comprise a first group of parallel strips electrically isolated from one another, said second electrodes comprises a second group of electrically connected parallel strips, a plurality of electrically connected third electrodes lying in said second plane, said third group of electrodes being spaced transversely of said portion of said first electrodes and extending intermediate of said second electrodes and said second and third groups of electrodes being electrically isolated.
9. An electron tube as described in claim 8 wherein said first electrodes are parallel to each other.
10. An electron tube as described in claim 9 wherein said second electrodes are connected to a common lead.
11. An electron tube as described in claim 10 wherein said third electrodes are connected to selector leads.
12. An electrode tube as described in claim 11 wherein means are provided to impress a positive predetermined voltage to said second electrodes and to apply a positive predetermined voltage to selected electrodes of the first and third electrode groups.
13. An electrode tube as described in claim 12 wherein the voltage impressed on the second electrodes has a duration of time T, the voltage impressed on selected ones of the first electrodes has a duration of T/K and the voltage impressed on selected ones of the third electrodes has a duration of T/K where K is an integer.
