2 , and after imagewise exposure, this is 5 minutes developed at 27°C in a surface developing solution-A. Such an emulsion coated on a support permits a positive type image high in maximum density and low in minimum density to be formed. In the formula, X is O, S, or NR
2 ; Q is a nonmetallic atomic group needed to form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring including that further having a 5- or 6-membered unsaturated ring; R

3 H, or from this optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, or alkoxy; and at least one of R
1 ,R
2 , and R
3 contains at least one of OH, COOH, or SO
3 H. The surface developing solution-A contains Na
2 SO
3 30.0 g; N-methyl-p- aminophenol sulfate 2.5 g; hydroquinone 2.5 g; NaBO
2 10.0 g; KBr 0.5 g; water to give a total volume of 1 liter.
