CONSTITUTION: A conjugated diene (e.g., 1,3-butadiene) is polymerized or copolymerized with a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g., styrene) in a hydrocarbon solvent such as hexane or toluene in the presence of an organolithium compound (e.g., n-butyllithim) as an initiator. A stabilizer (e.g., 4-methyl-2,6-di-t-butylphenol) or both of the stabilizer and a shortstop (e.g., ethanol) are added to the obtained polymer solution. After the solvent is removed from the polymer solution, 0.05W5 equivalent, per equivalent of the organolithium compound as the initiator, of an aromatic carboxylic acid (e.g., benzoic acid) is added to the product in the absence of water. In this way, the hue of the polymer can be improved.
