CONSTITUTION: A vacuum vessel of flat plate type image display device is composed of a face panel 1 having an image display screen, an electrode structure 2 in which electron emitting sources and planar electrodes are arranged, a back face plate 3 made of metal, a glass frit layer 4 to sealedly join the panel 1 with back face plate 3, and a thick film conductive pattern 5 as a signal input terminal which supplies signals to th electrode structure 2. The panel 1 is of flat plate in soda float glass coated internally with a fluorescent substance, and the conductive pattern 5 is affixed thereon. The back face plate 3 shall be of Fe-Ni alloy having a coefficient of thermal expansion approx. equal to that of the glass material used for the panel 1, and joining of the panel 1 with back face plate 3 is made using a low melting point glass frit, and thus thermal stresses and tensile stresses generated in the panel 1 are lessened.
